Free from the burden of many years
When she came to the Neurosurgery and Spine Department of the American International Hospital (AIH), Ms. JH (53 years old) had to use crutches to move around, the pain spread from her back to her legs, her legs were numb and her quality of life was severely reduced. She had previously undergone surgery many times but the root cause of the disease had not been found.
At AIH, after examination and with the support of imaging and electromyography, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Head of the Neurosurgery and Spine Unit, diagnosed Ms. JH with spinal stenosis - intervertebral foramina of the L3-4 and L4-5 vertebrae, causing nerve root compression, a potential but common cause of spinal pathology. Immediately after that, Dr. Hung prescribed treatment using the 2-port endoscopic surgery method (UBE).

Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) is a breakthrough minimally invasive technique in the treatment of complex spinal diseases. With two small, separate entrances for the endoscope and surgical instruments, UBE helps doctors clearly observe the internal anatomical structure, accurately remove compressive tissues such as herniated discs, thickened ligaments, or bone spurs while preserving the spinal structure. This method significantly reduces the level of damage, less post-operative pain, and faster recovery time compared to traditional surgery.
During surgery for the patient, Dr. Hung found that the nerve root was severely compressed, the ligamentum flavum was thick and calcified. The doctor removed the ligamentum flavum, calcification and bone spurs, helping to completely release the nerve root.

Endoscopic images during surgery help doctors clearly observe the area of nerve root compression and intervene accurately.
Immediately after surgery, the patient's pain was significantly reduced and she was able to walk. At a follow-up visit a week later, Ms. JH happily said that she was very satisfied with the treatment results. The pain had significantly subsided and she could walk without crutches. Thus, after many years of living with pain, this was the first time she felt happy and had faith in life.
Correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment
As the person who directly performed the surgery, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung said that the reason why the patient had been treated for a long time, even undergoing multiple surgeries without improvement, was because the disease had not been fully diagnosed. When the cause of the pain is not clearly identified, the treatment method chosen will be ineffective, causing the disease to last longer and the patient may have to undergo surgery multiple times.
At AIH, thorough clinical examination along with the support of diagnostic imaging such as MRI, CT-scan, electromyography, etc. helps to accurately diagnose the disease, thereby providing appropriate and effective intervention.

Correct diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment are key to avoiding repeated surgery for patients.
Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung said that lumbar spinal stenosis is one of the common causes of back pain, pain radiating down the legs, often seen in the elderly. Prolonged nerve compression leads to many serious consequences such as severe back pain radiating down the legs, numbness, weakness in the legs, loss of balance when walking, and even urinary and sexual disorders.
At American International Hospital (AIH), spinal diseases are treated based on close coordination between a team of experienced doctors and a system of advanced medical equipment (MRI, CT scan, C-arm, etc.). Thanks to that, diseases such as spinal stenosis, disc herniation, spondylolisthesis, tumors, spinal trauma, etc. are accurately diagnosed.
The hospital pioneers in applying advanced minimally invasive surgical methods such as microsurgery, endoscopy, etc., bringing high treatment efficiency and safety, helping patients recover quickly.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung has more than 20 years of experience treating complex neurological and spinal diseases.
With 20 years of experience in the field of neurosurgery and spine, trained in Vietnam, France, Germany, the US and Korea, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung is currently a leading expert in diagnosing and treating diseases related to the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and spine, especially cases requiring complex surgical intervention.
