Up to now, after nearly 4 months of implementation, the units are making efforts to complete the project two months ahead of schedule.
The new Phong Chau bridge project was implemented under an emergency construction order, after the old Phong Chau bridge collapsed due to storm No. 3 (September 2024). The 12th Army Corps was assigned by the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction ) to construct this important project.
Immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony, Corps 12 deployed 60 specialized, high-capacity equipment and machinery and mobilized nearly 200 people to demolish and clear the old bridge.
In a short time, the dismantling of the 5th span steel truss weighing more than 500 tons, the demolition of 2 abutments and 4 old bridge piers was completed. The project had favorable conditions in terms of land, support from the government and people, so the construction pace and atmosphere at the construction site were always bustling and hurried.

The new Phong Chau Bridge construction investment project is over 652m long, 20.5m wide, with 4 lanes for motor vehicles, built on a permanent scale with a total investment of over 635 billion VND; the starting point is in Phung Nguyen commune (Lam Thao district), the ending point is in Van Xuan commune (Tam Nong district). The bridge is constructed using reinforced concrete beams and prestressed reinforced concrete, the main bridge consists of 3 continuous beam spans, constructed using the balanced cantilever method, reinforced concrete abutments and piers, and bored pile foundations.

Colonel Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Commander of the 12th Corps, said: “During the construction process, the most difficult and stressful part is building two pillars T4 and T5 (under the river). The progress of drilling bored piles, pouring concrete for the base and body of pillars T4 and T5 must be completed before the first flood (around mid-April every year). Therefore, this is the “critical point” of the project. However, with our efforts and creativity, we are determined to complete the two pillars T4 and T5 on April 14 and 18. Along with that, we will also strive to complete the K0 block on the top of the pillar before May 19.
According to the investor's plan, this K0 block must be completed before July 7, so the progress is nearly two months ahead of the original plan. Once the K0 block is completed, the problem of minor flooding will not be a concern. The next job will be to cast the bridge segments. We organize the construction in 3 shifts, 4 teams, making every effort to complete the project ahead of schedule, ensuring the highest quality, and around early September 2025, we can close the joint.
Currently, the construction site is deploying 5 construction teams with a regular workforce of 250-300 workers and a large amount of modern machinery and equipment, including 4 high-capacity bored pile drilling machines that can drill 1,500mm in diameter; a floating system with 4 barges from 800 to 1,200 tons; a 500CV pusher to construct T4 and T5 piers and 8 cranes from 50 to 80 tons. To ensure progress, the unit determines that when construction items are almost completed, the next items must complete the preparation work to be ready for immediate consecutive construction.

According to Mr. Luong Van Long, Director of the Phong Chau Bridge Project Management Board (Thang Long Project Management Board - Ministry of Construction - investor), "Up to now, the two most difficult items, which are pile drilling and concrete pouring for the base and the body of the T4 and T5 pier under the river crossing before the flood, have been basically completed. With this progress, the Project Management Board and the units aim to complete the project on the occasion of National Day, September 2. It is completely feasible that the project can be opened to traffic before December 2025."
