Sam Finley received a heavy sentence. |
According to The Sun , Finley insulted Walsall striker Jamille Matt in the 23rd minute of a League Two match on January 11. The FA considered this a "serious offence" and it was also the second time Finley had been punished for similar behaviour.
In addition to the lengthy ban, Finley was also ordered to attend a mandatory anti-discrimination education programme. The FA asserted that Finley's conduct breached Rule E3.1 and was classified as a "serious offence" under E3.2 because it related to sexual orientation.
This is not the first time Finley has been in trouble. In 2016, he was banned for four games and fined for making discriminatory comments about a referee while playing for AFC Fylde. In 2020, the midfielder was handed an eight-match ban for abusing a Rochdale player while playing for Accrington Stanley.
In an official statement, Tranmere Rovers said they "condemn all forms of discrimination" and would deal with the matter internally. Finley, who played for Everton as a youth player and has played for Wrexham, Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers, has played 37 games this season, scoring twice and picking up ten yellow cards and one red card.
With the immediate suspension, Finley will miss the crucial period of the League Two relegation race, a serious loss for Tranmere Rovers both in terms of expertise and image.
