Linking corporate culture building with the peacekeeping mission

"Corporate culture needs to be associated with peace values. That is an important factor in building a strong enterprise, contributing to the development of the country, and at the same time spreading and consolidating peace values in the most practical way." That is the affirmation of Mr. Tran Xuan Hoang - Member of the Board of Directors of the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), Member of the Presidium of the Vietnam Peace Committee (VPC) in an interview with Thoi Dai Magazine.

- What is your concept of world peace and peaceful society?

In the current context, the concept of peace is increasingly expanded and deepened. In addition to fundamental factors such as national independence and territorial sovereignty , peace also has other key connotations such as a sustainable environment, human security, a fair and harmonious society and a humane lifestyle.

From the perspective of corporate culture, I believe that when a business successfully completes its business tasks, it is making a practical contribution to national peace . Because when material life is guaranteed, the risk of instability and conflict will be reduced.

Through promoting exchanges and cooperation, businesses are playing an effective role as a people-to-people foreign affairs channel, contributing to introducing the image of Vietnam as an integrated and developed country to international friends. Building and strengthening relationships with international partners not only brings economic and networking value to businesses, but also contributes to creating a more peaceful and cohesive international environment.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is also an indispensable factor in cultivating peace. When businesses actively support disadvantaged localities, this also means making efforts to narrow the gap between rich and poor, reducing regional differences - practical actions that contribute to creating stability in society. Deeply aware of this, BIDV always allocates resources of 300-400 billion VND per year from the welfare fund to support the community.

- What movements and activities has BIDV participated in to build and protect peace?

First of all, BIDV has developed a Corporate Culture Handbook, which emphasizes 5 core values: Intelligence - Trust - Integrity - Professionalism - Aspiration and 9 codes of conduct based on mutual respect and trust; spirit of cooperation; solidarity, understanding and sharing. We believe that building a strong corporate culture is the core to spread these good values to the community.

In addition, BIDV actively implements many activities to arouse the sense of social responsibility and love for the homeland among its staff and employees, such as: the plan "BIDV - Accompanying the sea and islands, period 2023 - 2025", the Capital Youth Rendezvous program "I love my Fatherland" (2015), along with many social security programs, charity runs, donation activities and building community houses.

In particular, the "Aspiration for Peace" Seminar organized by BIDV Party Committee in coordination with Vietnam Bank for Social Affairs on October 24, 2024 is a highlight. This is a meaningful political activity program, contributing to raising awareness and responsibility of cadres, youth union members, and workers about the sacred value of peace and national independence. Thereby, BIDV hopes that each cadre will appreciate the sacrifices of previous generations, creating motivation to continue to contribute, commit and promote BIDV's fine traditions in the current context.

The seminar is a peace education program initiated and implemented by UBHB Vietnam in coordination with other units. BIDV is the first enterprise to join UBHB Vietnam in implementing this program for all officers and employees.

- Why does BIDV participate in peace education events with UBHB Vietnam in general and the exchange event on the Peace Ship "Continuing the story of peace" in particular?

We see similarities between BIDV's corporate culture and the purpose and meaning of the activities of UBHB Vietnam - which is to build a peaceful life. I believe that the principles and purposes of UBHB Vietnam's activities are consistent with the vision of BIDV's Board of Directors in building, developing and practicing corporate culture.

Regarding the exchange activity “Continuing the story of peace”, the event took place on the occasion of Vietnam solemnly celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification. This further highlights the great and sacred value of the peace we are enjoying, while at the same time arousing deep gratitude and appreciation for the feats and sacrifices of previous generations. This is also a meaningful opportunity to educate BIDV’s young generation to continue to be grateful and contribute to preserving peace, contributing to the sustainable development of the country.

- What are your personal feelings and impressions during your time working as a member of the Vietnam Bar Federation?

I have been a member of the Vietnam Peace Committee for almost a full term. This is a very meaningful time for me. When I joined the Presidium and regularly participated in the Committee's activities, I have a deeper understanding of the value and significance of the peace work that the Committee is carrying out.

As a member of the Presidium of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations and a member of the Board of Directors of BIDV, I have tried to connect the activities of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations with those of BIDV to increase awareness of peace among BIDV staff and youth union members, contributing to the activities of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations. and participate in preserving peace in Vietnam.

- What are your expectations for developing and promoting peace education activities in Vietnam in general and at BIDV in particular in the future?

Based on the coordinated activities with UBHB Vietnam - typically the "Aspiration for Peace" seminar and programs to enhance the connection between UBHB Vietnam with international partners - we expect that the activities of the Committee, especially peace education work, will spread more and more widely among BIDV staff. Thereby, contributing to supporting us to develop and effectively practice corporate culture.

We wish UBHB Vietnam support the implementation of necessary procedures so that BIDV can establish the Peace Club. This will be the core to implement peace education activities for union members and youth - the young generations born after the war - to help them understand more deeply the value and meaning of peace, thereby joining hands to contribute to building sustainable peace for Vietnam and the world.

Through specific business activities, such as social security programs, supporting people in remote areas, contributing to narrowing the gap between rich and poor and creating a peaceful life for people across the country, we believe that this also contributes to strengthening the values of peace.

We believe that businesses in general, and BIDV in particular, need a peaceful environment. Only when there is peace, businesses will have stable conditions to develop their business, thereby truly bringing happiness to their staff in particular and the people of the whole country in general.

Thank you very much!
