The "big tree" of our country's culture, Huu Ngoc, has passed away at the age of 107.

Culturalist Huu Ngoc, who spent nearly eight decades as a bridge connecting the country's culture and the world, with dozens of valuable, monumental research works in many languages, passed away on May 2 in Hanoi, at the age of 107.

Culturalist Huu Ngoc was born in 1918 in Hanoi , originally from Thuan Thanh, Bac Ninh. Living in a family with many generations of Confucian scholars, doctors, and Nom scholars, he was imbued with Vietnamese culture.

He used to be a teacher, did propaganda work for the resistance, wrote for international newspapers, published foreign languages, did cultural diplomacy, wrote books... His rich life, witnessed the ups and downs of the country, experienced many jobs, many positions; traveled to many countries in the world , so he became a cultural "importer - exporter" - as he himself called himself during his lifetime.

He has made important contributions to promoting and introducing Vietnamese culture in general and the capital Hanoi in particular to international friends. The most famous book series on culture by culturalist Huu Ngoc and also his favorite book series is “Wandering in Vietnamese culture” (3 volumes) with 1,200 pages, in Vietnamese, English and French, which has been reprinted dozens of times.

In addition, he also has a bilingual book series in English - French "Anthology of Vietnamese Culture" consisting of 4 volumes written with Dr. Nguyen Khac Vien; the books "Accompanying the Century of Vietnamese Culture and History", "Vietnam - Tradition and Change"...

He also brought to Vietnamese readers valuable foreign cultural works, such as “Sketch of French Cultural Portrait”, “A Piece of Nordic Sky”, “Swedish Culture”, “American Cultural Profile”, “Wandering in the Culture of the Land of Cherry Blossoms”, “Key to Knowing and Understanding Laos”…

Culturalist Huu Ngoc always has a special love for Thang Long - Hanoi, where he was born and raised, with dozens of books dedicated to researching the culture of this place. Some of them are "Sketch of Hanoi cultural portrait" in English and French; "Traditional Hanoi" in English; the pocket book "Hanoi, who are you?"; "My Hanoi" nearly 500 pages thick...

In 2020, at the age of 102, he continued to work enthusiastically and launched the book series "Cáo hương lan gio" consisting of 2 volumes, nearly 1,000 pages, about world and Vietnamese celebrities in many fields...

With his contributions to culture and publishing throughout his life, cultural writer Huu Ngoc was awarded many prestigious awards: Two Independence Medals, the Medal of Military Exploit, the Medal of Academic Palm (France), the Legion of Honor (Sweden), the Vietnam Book Gold Award 2006, the Vietnam Book Bronze Award 2015, the National Book Award 2017, the Grand Prize - Bui Xuan Phai Award "For the Love of Hanoi" in 2017...

According to information from the family, the funeral of cultural activist Huu Ngoc will take place at 1:00 p.m. on May 5, at the Funeral Home of Hospital 198 (58 Tran Binh, Cau Giay, Hanoi).
