Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres is closing in on a blockbuster move to Arsenal for an initial fee of €63.5m (£54.86m), plus €10m in add-ons, but the reaction from fans of his parent club Sporting Lisbon has been one of anger and disappointment.
Gyokeres has impressed since his £20m move to Sporting Lisbon from Coventry. He has scored 97 goals and provided 28 assists in 102 games in all competitions. Last season, he contributed 54 goals in 52 games, the most of any player in Europe's top 10 leagues. His contributions helped Sporting win a domestic double of Primeira Liga and the Portuguese Cup.
However, the relationship between Gyokeres and Sporting has become strained recently, with the striker failing to attend pre-season training amid talks with Arsenal. He is believed to have agreed a five-year deal with the Gunners and hopes to complete the move before Saturday's Asian tour.
Gyokeres' agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, reportedly even waived the entire transfer fee to help the deal go through. However, controversy has erupted over whether Sporting have complied with a clause that would have allowed Gyokeres to leave for €60m plus add-ons. President Frederico Varandas has publicly denied the existence of any such agreement.
The reaction from Sporting fans has only intensified. At Wednesday night's friendly against Celtic at the Estadio Algarve (Sporting lost 2-0), supporters held up a number of banners in protest. One read: "I don't cry for those who leave, I'm happy for those who stay. The lions of our academy." Another said: "No one should put their own interests above the club, no matter who they are."
Despite once being a fan favourite, Gyokeres now faces a cold shoulder as he prepares to leave the Estádio José Alvalade for a new challenge in the Premier League.
