The 'father' of DeepSeek is among the world's most influential scientists.

DNVN - Liang Wenfeng, the founder of the artificial intelligence company DeepSeek, has been honored by the prestigious scientific journal Nature in its list of the 10 most influential people of 2025, thanks to his significant contributions to the field of AI.

Liang Wenfeng has just been officially selected for the annual "Nature's 10" list – a list honoring 10 individuals who have played a central role in the biggest science stories of the year. He is recognized for his achievements in advancing the development of powerful large-scale AI models.

According to Nature magazine, DeepSeek, under Liang's leadership, has truly "shaken the world of artificial intelligence" with the launch of its R1 model. This model is described by experts as possessing both superior power and cost-effectiveness. R1 "is trained on Nvidia's less advanced chip, is 100% open source, and is 96.4% cheaper than OpenAI o1 while delivering similar performance."

The journal Nature stated that the emergence of DeepSeek and the R1 model "immediately demonstrated that the United States is not as far ahead in the field of artificial intelligence as many experts had thought."

In September 2025, DeepSeek engineers published details in the journal Nature about how they built and trained R1. According to the scientific journal, this made R1 the first large-scale language model to undergo rigorous expert review.

The journal Nature stated: "By publishing its formula, DeepSeek has taught other AI researchers how to train a reasoning model."

Besides Liang Wenfeng, this year's list also includes another Chinese scientist, geologist Du Mengran. She is known as a "deep-sea explorer" for her pioneering dives to the hadal zone – the deepest layer of the ocean (over 6km deep), where she and her colleagues discovered the deepest ecosystem ever observed with living animals on Earth.

The "Nature's 10" list, compiled by the editors of Nature magazine, is not an award or ranking but rather a recognition of significant developments and outstanding scientific stories of the year. This year, the achievements honored reflect a range of scientific endeavors from the largest to the smallest in nature, including astronomy, deep-ocean research, biomedicine, public health policy , and artificial intelligence.

Brendan Maher, a columnist at Nature, said the 2025 list celebrates "the discovery of new horizons" and unwavering commitment to science. He stressed that "it is inspiring to see the work of so many people striving to understand the natural world and, in many cases, to help it."

That is why Liang Wenfeng and the other scientists were selected.
