Việt NamViệt Nam18/01/2025

Ca Mau Newspaper When the golden rice fields in Tran Hoi commune, Tran Van Thoi district are harvested, it is also the time for farmers to bring crops to the fields, with lush green squash and gourd vines. The weather at the end of the year is quite favorable, so many farmers take advantage of planting early, limiting the shortage of irrigation water.

At this time, when coming to Hamlet 4, Hamlet 5, Tran Hoi commune, everywhere you can see golden ripe rice fields and farmers starting to harvest. Worried about the lack of water for irrigation, many households take advantage of planting earlier than every year to proactively source water for the squash crop.

Mr. Tran Van Bac's pumpkin field in Hamlet 5 has now begun to bud. Having more than 7 years of experience growing crops in the fields, Mr. Bac said: "Every year, at this time, I just mound the pumpkin roots and wait for the pumpkin shoots to crawl down to the field. But this year, I was afraid of the lack of water for production, so I harvested the rice earlier to proactively bring the crops down to the field. Currently, the pumpkin has begun to bud."

This year, Mr. Bac's family planted more than 9,600 pumpkin plants of Trang Nong 151 variety, and currently, traders have placed deposits to buy them. Having grown this pumpkin variety for many years, Mr. Bac said that Trang Nong 151 variety is suitable for the soil here, can be harvested in about 75 days, has high yield, and good quality, so it is favored by many traders.

"Last year, with 2 hectares of pumpkin, my family harvested more than 42 tons of standard pumpkin, not to mention the fruit yield that did not meet the standards. We harvested right after Tet. Traders came to the garden to buy at 10,000 VND/kg, each fruit weighed 6-8 kg," Mr. Bac shared.

With more than 3 hectares, Mr. Tran Ngoc Kham's family, Hamlet 5, uses 1 hectare to bring color to the fields. This year, Mr. Kham decided to plant about 6 thousand squash plants with the varieties of gourd squash, En Vang, Trang Nong 151.

Mr. Kham shared: “After growing two rice crops, at this time, farmers here start to put crops in the fields. At the end of the year, they only wait for the pumpkin crop to be in the fields, so most farmers here are proactive and actively take good care of the crop. This season, I grow many types of crops so that traders can easily buy them, and I also avoid losing crops.”

With nearly 10 years of experience growing squash, Mr. Kham clearly understands the characteristics of each squash variety. For him, each type will give different yields and quality, but in general, the annual crop helps farmers earn high income, so his family actively takes care of it. According to Mr. Kham's calculations, each crop brings crops to the field, farmers earn 2-3 times more than growing rice. In order for the crop to achieve the expected yield, at this time, Mr. Kham actively fertilizes, waters, prepares to cover buds, and cuts the stalks, leaving only one fruit per root.

Bringing color to the fields helps Mr. Tran Ngoc Kham's family earn nearly 50 million VND each year after deducting expenses.

Mr. Tran Minh Thuat, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tran Hoi Commune, informed: "There are only two rice crops per year, but there are years when farmers are forced to lower prices by traders, so they also face difficulties. After harvesting rice, the fields are planted with crops such as pumpkin, squash, gourd, squash, etc. In particular, thanks to the pumpkin crop, farmers have high income every year. We regularly advise farmers to produce according to the crop schedule to proactively source irrigation water, avoid crop losses, so that each crop yields high income."

Mr. Nguyen Van Doan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tran Hoi Commune, said: "This year, the whole commune planted 147 hectares of color in the fields, with nearly 200 households, mainly in Hamlet 4 and Hamlet 5. When the 11th lunar month came around, farmers started this crop, after harvesting the winter-spring rice crop. Pumpkin is easy to grow, requires little care, but the fruit yield is high, so people make a profit and are very excited"./.
