Overcoming the loss of his mother, Luu Van Khoa, 23 years old, graduated as valedictorian of the pedagogical faculty of Dalat University and was directly recruited to be a teacher at a specialized school in Ho Chi Minh City.

In mid-January, when he heard that Ho Chi Minh City had directly recruited him as an excellent student, the first image that flashed through Khoa's mind was his mother. The young man from Bao Loc thought to himself that if his mother were still alive, she would be satisfied with his new milestone. That was also Khoa's feeling when he stepped up to the podium to be honored as the valedictorian of the Pedagogy major at Da Lat University in June 2023.

"Every important event in my life, I think of my mother, believing that she is still following my journey even from far away," Khoa said emotionally.

Orphaned at the age of 7, Khoa's mother took him to live with his maternal grandparents in Bao Loc, Lam Dong. Khoa's memory of his father was that of a diligent medical station chief, assigned to an economically disadvantaged area of Binh Thuan. Therefore, during high school, this young man dreamed of pursuing a career in medicine, continuing his father's work.

During 12 years of school, Khoa did not attend extra classes. The male student spent a lot of time studying and learning more about Math and Biology to take the B00 block exam (Math, Chemistry, Biology) to enter the medical field. In grades 10 and 11, Khoa won second prize in the provincial excellent student competition and a silver medal in the 30/4 Biology Olympiad.

But in grade 12, thinking about his family's circumstances, Khoa realized that studying medicine was not feasible. Medical school lasted 6 years, the tuition was quite high while his mother's salary as a worker was not enough, Khoa chose to study Mathematics Education at Dalat University to be close to his mother and not have to pay tuition.

"My mother always wanted me to grow up in the best possible conditions. When I was in my first year, I wanted to study ahead to graduate early and start working, but my mother wanted me to both study and participate in movement activities, to have a complete and memorable student life," Khoa said.

The male student said that the habit of self-studying during high school helped him adapt well to the university environment and the teaching methods of the lecturers, maintaining stable results. No matter what subject he studies, Khoa wants to understand the nature of the knowledge, so he finds more documents and reference books at home and abroad to read. In addition, Khoa regularly participates in volunteer activities, Youth Union, and Association at school.

In October 2021, while sitting in the lecture hall, Khoa received a call informing him that his mother had passed away in a traffic accident. The sudden incident left him bewildered and disoriented. After more than two weeks off school, encouraged by relatives, friends, and teachers, Khoa tried to return to school.

At first, the male student's mentality was still unstable, often depressed, even thinking about dropping out of school. Khoa then realized that he had to try harder than before, to live well as his mother wished.

Recalling this period, Mr. Le Vu Dinh Phi, Head of the Pedagogical Faculty, Dalat University, said that Khoa was very quiet and closed off. It took a while for the male student to gradually open up and return to participating in movement activities, in addition to studying.

"Khoa is a very admirable case. After going through a big incident, he got up, maintained good academic results and graduated as valedictorian with an average score of 3.73/4," said Mr. Phi.

Khoa said that many teachers advised him to pursue a master’s degree to become a university lecturer. Seeing that this was a suitable direction, after graduation, Khoa returned to Ho Chi Minh City with the plan to work part-time and then apply for a master’s degree in Mathematics at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education or the University of Natural Sciences .

While waiting, a recruitment notice for civil servants from excellent students and young scientists in Ho Chi Minh City attracted Khoa. Seeing that he was qualified, Khoa submitted his application. To prepare for the interview round, in addition to his professional expertise and skills, Khoa learned more about the Civil Servant Law and the Education Law and answered them all smoothly.

Khoa is one of the first three civil servants recruited by Ho Chi Minh City under this category. In addition to the monthly salary according to the rank and grade, Khoa receives an additional allowance equal to 100% of his salary, the total of both amounts is about 8.5 million VND, within 5 years, not including additional income.

The young man was assigned by the Department of Education and Training to teach at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, taking up the job right after Tet.

For Khoa, being able to join the city’s oldest and top-quality specialized school is both an honor and a challenge. He hopes to learn a lot of professional knowledge and skills from his senior teachers to soon become steady in his career.

"I will try to apply what I have, learn more teaching methods, to inspire and convey to students, not only knowledge but also ethics, behavior, and personality," Khoa said.
