Russia launches massive attack, fierce fighting in Avdiivka

Rybar channel reported that in the Avdiivka area, servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces, with the support of artillery and air force, have been conducting massive offensive operations on both the northern and southern flanks since early morning on November 28.

At the same time, the Russian army is reinforcing the previously controlled defense lines. However, there is still no specific information on the current battlefield situation.

South of Avdivka, Russian troops have made advances south of Sjeverne/Severne. Despite recent reports, it is too early to say that Russian troops have reached the outskirts of the village.

According to Suriyakmaps channel, in the north of Bakhmut , Russian troops are said to have entered the village of Khromove after regaining control of the northern hills.

Fierce fighting continues on the southern flank of Bakhmut. Russian forces are attempting to seize the surrounding tactical heights. According to some reports, Russian units have recaptured two strongholds from the enemy.

In Kupyansk , for the past three weeks, battles for positions have been taking place south of Lyman Pershyi with Russian troops making advances in the forest and grey zone. In the late hours of yesterday, Russian troops reached the first houses of Syn'kivka. However, the Ukrainians repelled the attack.

A destroyed Leopard 1 tank between Kupyansk and Kreminna suggests Kiev has moved another “new” NATO-trained brigade there.

Mr. Zelensky: We are significantly strengthening fortifications, there will be enough mines and concrete

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said he had discussed with his generals the strengthening of regional fortifications and air defenses, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

“The first thing is consolidation. We are significantly strengthening it. There are detailed reports at all levels: the General Staff, the Ministry of Defense , the Prime Minister, local authorities, regional commanders,” Mr Zelensky said.

There must be a complete corresponding work in the community. Everything is absolutely detailed, our country will certainly have enough mines and concrete. We need more speed and efficiency, and everyone responsible for this has a clear mission."

The meeting also analyzed recent attacks on Ukraine and air defense tactics. Mr. Zelensky agreed on the need to strengthen mobile fire groups and noted that the operation of Patriot and NASAMS air defense missile systems in Ukraine is very effective.

Russian submarine lurks in Black Sea despite harsh weather

Two Russian submarines capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles are still actively operating in the Black Sea, Ukrainian defense officials said on November 28, Kyiv Independent reported.

Bad weather conditions caused by winter storms have forced Russia to withdraw some naval assets in recent days.

The Southern Defense Command of Ukraine said the Russian missile threat level remained "high" and stressed: "Pay attention to air warning signals. Detection of submarine launches of missiles from underwater is complicated. Quickly go to shelter."

Moscow usually maintains two to three submarines operating in the Black Sea.

EU Council approves additional funding for training of Ukrainian soldiers

AFP reported that the European Union Council on November 28 approved a budget, spending an additional 194 million euros (213 million USD) for the mission to train Ukrainian soldiers, bringing the total cost to about 280 million USD.

The funds will be provided through the European Peace Facility and “in the form of necessary lethal and non-lethal equipment and supplies, as well as services to support training activities,” the council's press service wrote.

“The aim of today’s decision is to continue to support the capacity building of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, based on Ukraine’s needs and taking into account the increasing scope and complexity of the training programme… This support will continue to facilitate large-scale training for Ukraine and enable EU Member States to provide the necessary training equipment and supplies,” the statement said.

The European Union Military Assistance Mission to Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) was established last October to provide individual, collective and specialist training to the Ukrainian military.

More than 34,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been trained in this mission since October 17, 2022.

Russia makes progress north of Avdiivka

The Guardian reported that in its latest intelligence update, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) said Russia had made further advances in recent days on the northern axis in its efforts to encircle Avdiivka.

The Russian military has stepped up its ground and air attacks on Avdiivka since mid-October, seeing it as the focal point of a slow-moving offensive across eastern Ukraine's Donbass region in the 21-month conflict.

Since early October, Russian forces have advanced up to 2km in the area, the British Ministry of Defense said. While modest, the advance could be one of Russia’s biggest victories since the spring of 2023. It has cost Moscow’s combat units thousands of lives.

Russian troops have approached the Avdiivka coke and chemical plant, a cluster of fortified Ukrainian defenses.

Although Avdiivka was surrounded on three sides, Ukraine still controlled a corridor about 7km wide, through which they continued to supply the city.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has encouraged members of the alliance to “continue” to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, Reuters reports.

"Our obligation is to make sure that we provide Ukraine with the weapons that it needs," Mr Stoltenberg told reporters as he arrived for a meeting of NATO foreign ministers at the alliance's headquarters in Brussels.

“We just have to go in that direction. It's also in our security interests,” he said.

Stoltenberg's comments come as a $60 billion US military aid package proposed by the Biden administration is in limbo due to opposition from some Republicans in Congress.

At the same time, the proposal of the EU foreign policy chief to allocate up to 20 billion euros over four years for military aid to Ukraine has met with opposition from the bloc's member states.
