Chieng Sai changes crop structure

As a remote commune, in recent years, Chieng Sai has implemented synchronous solutions to help people change their "thinking and working methods", promote the conversion of crop structure, increase income value per unit of cultivated land area, and gradually improve their lives.

Chieng Sai commune was established on the basis of Chieng Sai commune and Phieng Con commune, the old Bac Yen district, with an area of 124.55 km² and a population of 6,720 people. Sharing with us about the journey to find a way out of poverty, Mr. Vang A Chu, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: When mentioning Chieng Sai commune, in the memories of many people, it is wrapped up in two words "difficult and miserable". This place has a basin-shaped terrain, fragmented, hot and dry climate. Turning difficulties into advantages, the Party Committee and the commune government have promoted and mobilized people to actively shift the crop structure, cultivate tropical fruit trees, drought-resistant food crops combined with intensive farming, bringing stable income to the people.

The commune actively coordinates with specialized agencies to organize training, transfer science and technology, select plant varieties suitable for soil conditions and production level of the people to develop the economy . Effectively use capital from production support programs and projects to support seedlings and materials for the people. Commune mass organizations create conditions for members to access preferential loans for economic development, the total outstanding debt of the Social Policy Bank of the commune is currently over 57 billion VND.

With many synchronous solutions, helping many households to innovate their thinking, invest in production development, build collective economic models, apply modern science and technology to production, contributing to increasing productivity and product quality. In the past 5 years, the commune has mobilized people to convert low-yield corn and cassava growing areas to grow 625 hectares of fruit trees, including late-ripening longan, Taiwanese mango, Thai mango... Some areas have been applied by people to produce according to VietGAP standards. People in the villages: Tang, En, Suoi Trang, Nam Lin, Suoi Ngang, Co Muong, Na Don, Que Son converted over 420 hectares of corn and cassava growing land to grow raw sugarcane. Low-lying villages, along the Da River reservoir, converted some areas of degraded agricultural land to grow economic forests...

Ban En is one of the leading villages in converting the crop structure in the commune. Mr. Quang Van Don, Party cell secretary and village head, said: Since the end of 2015, the Party cell and the village management board have promoted and mobilized people to convert 42 hectares of corn and rice to fruit trees, mainly Taiwanese mango, early-ripening longan and 23 hectares of sugarcane. In 2024, over 40 tons of various fruits and 600 tons of raw sugarcane will be harvested for Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, with a purchase price of more than 1,000 VND/kg. People's lives are increasingly improving.

In Co Muong village, thanks to the conversion to sugarcane cultivation, people have escaped poverty. For example, Mr. Dinh Van Oi grows over 2.5 hectares of sugarcane, earning over 200 million VND/year. Mr. Oi shared: In 2020, I started converting low-yield corn and cassava areas to sugarcane. Thanks to proper care and technical processes, every crop brings high yields. Not only my family but most households in the village have switched to sugarcane cultivation, earning from 100-200 million VND/year.

Thanks to the active conversion of crop structure, the life of the people of Chieng Sai commune has been increasingly improved, creating conditions to contribute to the construction of new rural areas. Along with the investment of the State, in the past 5 years, the people have contributed over 1 billion VND to harden 10 internal roads; build cultural houses in Na Don, Suoi Trang, Ky Son villages...

With the goal of no more poor households according to the multidimensional poverty standard by 2030, the Party Committee and the government of Chieng Sai commune continue to promote propaganda for people to change the structure of crops and livestock; mobilize households to cooperate in production, increase the value of goods; enhance the application of science and technology. Focus on investing in building synchronous economic and social infrastructure, improving the material and spiritual life of the people.
