According to a memorandum issued by new Attorney General Pam Bondi on February 5 (local time), KleptoCapture will cease operations as part of a shift in focus by the Trump administration, Reuters news agency reported.
Accordingly, resources spent on sanctions enforcement and asset seizures of Russian oligarchs will be redirected to the fight against drug cartels and international crime. Prosecutors assigned to the task force will return to their previous positions.
The "KleptoCapture" Special Task Force was created after Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in 2022.
The Biden administration created the task force to financially strain President Vladimir Putin's wealthy associates, cut Russia off from global markets and impose broad sanctions on Moscow.
The KleptoCapture Task Force has filed indictments against aluminum tycoon Oleg Deripaska and TV mogul Konstantin Malofeyev for sanctions violations, and seized yachts belonging to Russian oligarchs targeted by the US, such as Suleiman Kerimov and Viktor Vekselberg.
