German Shepherd dogs perform an obstacle course including a roof fence, a cow fence, a fire ring, and a 1.8 m high wooden wall. The average lifespan of a service dog is 10-12 years, and they develop fully and reach their peak performance at 5-10 years old. Dogs over 3 months old begin training, get used to their names, play with balls and rags, eat some rough food, and walk next to the trainer to get used to their scent. At 6 months old, dogs practice obedience, listen to commands to stand, lie down, sit, cry, sniff, smell, and find things. One-year-old dogs move on to specialized training.
Depending on breed, physical condition, and flexibility, dogs are classified into different specialties. Dogs with a good sense of smell and flexible nerves are often used to identify scent sources for search and rescue, support criminal investigations, and fight drug cases. Large, strong, and aggressive dogs are classified into combat and target protection.
