After 2 years of separation, a Chinese man cycled 4,400 km in more than 100 days to reconcile with his wife, but this action was criticized by the online community.
The man, surnamed Zhou (in his 40s, living in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, China), met his wife, surnamed Li, in Shanghai and married in 2007. After divorcing in 2013, the couple reconciled and remarried, later welcoming a son and a daughter. However, they later separated due to personal conflicts.
“There was no serious problem between us, it was just that we were both very stubborn and acted impulsively, which led to many breakups and reconciliations,” Zhou explained, adding that they still kept in touch and both hoped for a chance to reunite.
Reflecting on their reunion, Li shared: “He contacted me and wanted to get back together, I jokingly said I was driving to Lhasa (Tibet Autonomous Region). If he could cycle there, I could consider reconciliation. To be honest, I just said that casually; I didn’t expect him to actually do it,” Li told the Yangtse Evening Post.

On July 28, Zhou started his cycling journey from Nanjing city, he traveled 4,400 km in more than 100 days and finally arrived in Lhasa on October 28.
During his journey, Zhou had two incidents. The first incident occurred in Anhui Province, where he suffered heatstroke and was hospitalized. The second, more serious incident occurred in Yichang, Hubei Province, where he collapsed while cycling on the road, having once again suffered heatstroke in the 40-degree heat and dehydration.
“The situation in Yichang was quite serious, my wife even drove hundreds of kilometers to take care of me,” Zhou recalled.
Li encouraged him to give up the trip, saying, "I can see your sincerity. If you really want to be together, there's no need to risk your lives." However, Zhou refused, determined to complete the trip and prove his commitment.
Later, while driving back, Li suffered from altitude sickness in Nyingchi, 400 kilometers from Lhasa, prompting Zhou to rush to her rescue. After she recovered, they continued their journey together to Lhasa. Upon their arrival on October 28, they held a small reconciliation ceremony and formally announced their reunion.

Zhou is now planning his next cycling trip to Nepal and Europe, while Li has returned home to Jiangsu province.
“I didn’t go back with her because I planned to continue cycling. The next stop was Nepal. She also said she might come see me when she felt better,” Zhou shared.
In 2023, there were about 3.61 million divorces in China, resulting in a divorce rate of 2.6 per 1,000. In 2021, the Chinese government enacted a new law requiring couples to undergo a 30-day “cooling off” period, meaning they must wait 30 days after filing for divorce before finalizing the divorce proceedings.

The couple's story received mixed reactions, with many criticizing them for their lack of commitment to their marriage and responsibility for their children: "It seems touching, but the core problem is that both of them are too stubborn. Their personalities are unlikely to change. Even if they travel more than 4,000km, love that involves torturing each other is unlikely to last long"; "Who will take care of the children during their trip? Don't they need to go to school?"
Another user expressed his opinion: “Before leaving, the husband completely followed his wife. But after she returned home, he decided to continue cycling to Nepal and Europe without going home first. Is this the charm of cycling? To make a man so devoted that he forgets that he has a wife and two children waiting for him at home?”
