Focus on forecasting and predicting pests and diseases: Effectively protecting crops

Every year, Thai Nguyen cultivates about 67,000 hectares of rice, over 15,000 hectares of vegetables; intensively cultivates more than 22,000 hectares of tea, 14,000 hectares of fruit trees... In fact, cultivation is bringing the main source of income for many households in the province. To ensure the productivity, quality and efficiency of crops, the planning, forecasting and prevention of pests and diseases are always of concern to all levels and sectors in the province.

Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, said: Estimating and forecasting the time when pests and diseases arise in each stage of plant growth and development helps people proactively take measures to prevent and control pests and diseases, protect and increase crop productivity.

According to Mr. Ta, the work of predicting and forecasting pests and diseases on crops is carried out regularly and continuously by the unit. The Department has assigned technical staff to regularly coordinate with agricultural service centers of districts and cities to conduct investigations to issue periodic weekly and monthly notices, forecasting harmful organisms to propose timely and effective prevention measures.

Currently, in Thai Nguyen, leaf blast, leaf roller, two-spotted stem borer, brown planthopper - white-backed planthopper, stink bugs... have appeared on spring rice; cutworm, stem borer, leaf-eating caterpillar, brown leaf blight, rats... have appeared on corn; silkworm, flea beetle, downy mildew... are harmful to leafy vegetables. In tea plants, pests such as: green leafhopper, mosquito bug, silk beetle, red spider, bud rot disease... have also appeared.

Recognizing the situation of pests and diseases on crops, the Department has directed staff to increase their visits to the base to investigate pests and diseases, grasp weather developments to predict, forecast and coordinate with localities and agricultural extension officers to propagate and guide people to proactively prevent and control them in a timely manner, preventing widespread spread. In particular, instructing people to use the right type of pesticides, dosage, and spraying techniques...

Ms. Le Thi Thanh, Hamlet 7, Cu Van Commune (Dai Tu) said: Every year, my family grows 5 sao of rice and 2 sao of vegetables. I feel very secure when agricultural extension officers always accompany me during the production process. Not only do they inform me about the risks of pests and diseases, but they also give very specific instructions on prevention and control measures.

Every week, information about the situation of harmful diseases and measures to prevent and control pests and diseases for crops is announced on the zalo group of the village. In addition to monitoring the weather and visiting the fields regularly, farmers only need to grasp and follow the instructions to achieve very positive results. - Ms. Le Thi Thanh

It can be seen that for more than 20 years, the work of investigating, predicting and forecasting plant pests and diseases has always been carried out by all levels and functional sectors in the province right at the beginning of the crop season. Plant pests and diseases are detected early and promptly reported to relevant units and localities for effective prevention and control. Accordingly, for many years now, the main plant pests and diseases have been well controlled, without affecting the growth, development, productivity and yield of crops.

In 2024 alone, despite being affected by storm No. 3, localities in the province still controlled crop diseases well and achieved high productivity and good quality, basically completing the set targets and plans. Specifically, rice output reached 354.6 thousand tons, corn output reached 71.2 thousand tons. The whole province harvested over 288 thousand tons of various green vegetables and 272.8 thousand tons of fresh tea buds... Ensuring safety for crops has also contributed to increasing the value of products obtained on the province's agricultural land, reaching 131 million VND/ha or more, exceeding the set plan by 0.8%...

To carry out the work of planning and forecasting more effectively, in the coming time, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection will continue to direct the agricultural extension force to strengthen coordination with local authorities to regularly visit fields, conduct surveys, and forecast in order to promptly issue notices to communes, wards, and towns to guide people in effective pest control. At the same time, use social networks such as Zalo, Facebook, etc. to propagate and guide people in protecting crops.
