Accordingly, consumers learn more about safety factors, information about nutritional ingredients, origin, certified quality products, green criteria, sustainable production, etc.

Many activities to encourage green consumption

Recently, retail channels and supermarkets in Dong Nai province have implemented many models and programs to promote green consumption and sustainable consumption.

Vu Thanh Tan, representative of the Communications Department of Central Retail Group in Vietnam, said that the GO! supermarket system nationwide, including GO! Dong Nai and GO! Tan Hiep supermarkets in Dong Nai, has been applying the business of banana leaf-wrapped vegetable products, helping customers accompany the supermarket in protecting the environment.

In late June and early July 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Trade Cooperatives ( Saigon Co.op ) in general and the co.opmart supermarkets in Dong Nai (Co.opmart Bien Hoa, Co.opmart Dong Xoai and Co.opmart Dong Phu) in particular, simultaneously implemented the system's environmental program with the theme "Vietnamese Family - Green Ambassador".

To date, the group has worked with nearly 30 fresh food suppliers such as vegetables, tubers, fruits, etc. to replace plastic packaging with biodegradable nylon bags for product packaging. In addition, organic rice and coffee products sold at GO! have also received support from manufacturers to convert packaging materials from non-biodegradable plastic to paper.

Director of Co.opmart Dong Phu Supermarket (located in Dong Phu commune) Nguyen Quoc Minh said that in the context of the increasingly widespread green consumption trend, Co.opmart Dong Phu clearly identifies its responsibility as not only a business unit, but also a "green ambassador", contributing to promoting a sustainable lifestyle in the community.

Co.opmart Dong Phu prioritizes selling “green - clean - sustainable” products. In particular, the supermarket is expanding its list of environmentally friendly products such as: cups, bowls, plates, glasses, etc. made from plant-based materials; biodegradable plastic bags, non-woven fabric bags, products that can be reused many times to replace traditional nylon bags; environmentally friendly household items, products with eco-labels and recycled packaging, etc.

In addition, according to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Minh, Co.opmart Dong Phu has installed and is registering to connect to the rooftop solar power grid to gradually replace traditional power sources with renewable green energy. This is an important step in the roadmap to reduce carbon emissions and use energy efficiently. The supermarket also expands activities to promote green, sustainable consumption associated with environmental protection and waste classification at source.

Promote propaganda and raise public awareness

Consumers, especially urban residents, are increasingly interested in green consumption trends. However, in reality, popularizing these models is not easy.

Therefore, in order for green consumption models to be widely replicated and effectively promoted, there needs to be a long-term roadmap with many specific solutions, suitable for each residential area, especially solutions to raise awareness and change consumers' shopping habits.

The Provincial People's Committee has issued plans on implementing the program of efficient energy use and sustainable production and consumption in the locality every year. In 2025, one of the goals of the plan is to promote production and consumption on the basis of innovation, creativity, development and dissemination of sustainable production and consumption models. At the same time, promote domestic production and consumption, promote sustainable lifestyles, and aim to develop a circular economy for the industrial sector in the province...

Ms. Pham Thanh Thao (residing in Tam Hiep ward) said that she hopes that green consumption will become a more popular trend in the daily life of every citizen. Because when every person and every family is aware of and practices green consumption, life will be significantly improved in many aspects.

“The first thing that comes to my mind is health. When we choose environmentally friendly products with few toxic chemicals, such as organic vegetables, fruits, clean food, or products that do not contain pollutants, we will certainly reduce the risk of diseases related to pollution and chemicals. We and the next generation will grow up in a cleaner environment,” Ms. Thao confided.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh (residing in Xuan Loc commune) expressed that green consumption is not something too far away but is right in the choices in daily life. In particular, for green consumption to truly come into life, it is necessary to raise public awareness, spread more propaganda activities, and extensive programs on green consumption. Specifically, when each person buys food and supplies, they need to prioritize clean food, local vegetables and fruits, and seasonal fruits to minimize long-distance transportation causing carbon emissions.

“In addition, consumers need to pay attention and choose to buy products with environmentally friendly packaging, easily decomposed or recyclable, and limit the use of plastic bags and foam boxes. At the same time, each person must classify waste at the source, recycle what is possible, and limit the use of disposable items. For example, bring a cloth bag when going to the market, use a personal water bottle instead of buying bottled water,” Quang Vinh shared.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Minh added: “We believe that when consumers change their behavior and businesses join forces, green consumption will not only be a trend, but will become a new, positive, civilized and sustainable consumer culture. Co.opmart Dong Phu will promote communication to consumers about the trend of green and sustainable consumption.”
