Nowadays, many people with disabilities are still able to work and want to find jobs to be independent in life. However, finding a suitable job for them is a difficult journey...
Always "politely rejected"
Mr. Pham Van Thu, born in 1990, residing in Nguyen Dai Nang ward, has atrophied legs that make him unable to walk normally and has to use crutches. However, he always has the will to rise up, not wanting to depend on others for his life.
After completing his secondary school education, he studied electrical repair at the Hai Duong Province Social Protection Center (formerly known as the Hai Duong Province). After graduating, he applied for jobs at several electronics companies in the local industrial park. Believing that he would be given priority in hiring because of his disability, Mr. Thu was full of hope.
However, the reality was not as expected. “I went to many companies to apply for jobs, even once tried to apply to a foreign company specializing in toy production. All of them politely refused with the reason that they would contact me later and did not reply,” Mr. Thu sadly said.
After many failures, Mr. Thu decided to open a small electrical repair shop in his hometown. His current job helps him earn a modest income, because the demand of the people in the area is not much. Combined with the State's disability allowance, he has to be very frugal to cover his daily expenses. That reality makes him not dare to think about getting married and having a small home of his own.
Similarly, Nguyen Van Truong in Bach Dang ward lost his left arm in an accident when he was young. Despite being disadvantaged compared to his friends, he still tried to finish high school. With the hope of having a stable job, he also applied for jobs at many companies in and outside the city. However, he was repeatedly rejected on the grounds that his physical disability was not suitable for a collective working environment.
Currently, he teaches badminton to children in the neighborhood to earn an income to cover his living expenses, but this job is not always available and the income is not high, especially when the children start school. "I am still healthy so I continue to look for a suitable job, even though I know it is very difficult" - Mr. Truong confided.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Nha, Head of the City Disabled Youth Club, Hai Phong currently has thousands of disabled youths who want to find suitable jobs. However, the number of disabled people accepted into production and business establishments is still modest. Most disabled people have to create their own jobs or work within their families.
The reason is that many businesses are hesitant to accept disabled workers, fearing that it will affect production efficiency and economic benefits. "Many businesses think that accepting disabled people is like "tying themselves up", because they think that people with physical disabilities or poor cognition will have difficulty meeting job requirements" - Ms. Nha shared.

Need to be shared
According to Mr. Bui Quoc Trinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Home Affairs, recently, the city has also implemented many activities to support people with disabilities, including vocational training and job referrals.
However, job introduction activities for this group of cases still face many difficulties and require the cooperation of the social community.
Recently, Amtran Vietnam Technology Co., Ltd. (VSIP Hai Phong Urban, Industrial and Service Area) has a plan to recruit disabled workers. Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Trang, Senior Director in charge of administration and human resources of the company informed: "According to the plan, the company will recruit 1-2% of disabled workers. All their benefits and rights are guaranteed as other workers according to the law. In addition, the company considers providing additional housing support to facilitate the disabled in their daily life and travel."
Unfortunately, currently, businesses that are willing to create employment opportunities for people with disabilities like Amtran Vietnam are still rare. Article 10 of Decree No. 28/2012/ND-CP of the Government clearly stipulates: agencies, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to hire people with disabilities.
However, in reality, this has not been widely implemented and spread in businesses. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nha, Head of the City Disabled Youth Club, said: “In the process of introducing jobs to people with disabilities, we have to go directly to each business to persuade them to accept. Few businesses voluntarily register with us to recruit people with disabilities.”
For people with disabilities to truly be able to rise up in life, in addition to the attention of the authorities, there needs to be accompaniment from businesses and the social community. Businesses, production facilities, and individuals with business conditions should open their hearts and accept people with disabilities to do suitable jobs.
When employed, people with disabilities have a stable income, are confident in integrating, and are no longer a burden on their families and society.
People with disabilities are disadvantaged in life, so they need sympathy and sharing from the community. For those who are still able to work, the desire to have a stable job is a completely legitimate aspiration.
