Green Transition in China: When Green is Gold

Việt NamViệt Nam22/08/2024

(LĐ online) - In recent years, China has taken many strong measures to promote green transformation, environmental protection and sustainable development. One typical example of this effort is in the Ningxia Autonomous Region, Northwest China, where an abandoned mineral mine has now become a large grape growing area.

Yuanshi Vineyard, covering an area of over 200 hectares, currently grows 16 different types of wine grapes. It is worth noting that the area used to be a quarry, but in an effort to improve the ecosystem and protect the environment, the local government decided to close down coal and other mineral mines in designated areas. Vineyards have gradually sprung up along the foot of Helan Mountain, which has ideal natural conditions for growing grapes.

In June 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited a vineyard to learn about ecological conservation efforts in the area. He said the wine industry has great potential for development as Chinese people's living standards continue to improve.

Since 2017, about 23,000 hectares of the Gobi Desert have been transformed into green belts through the development of vineyards and windbreak forest projects. Currently, the region is home to more than 200 wineries, providing jobs for nearly 130,000 people each year.

Not only does it help develop the wine industry, a better ecological environment also contributes to improving the quality of life of the people. Tourists from all over come here to enjoy the beauty of the vineyards and feel the positive changes that nature brings.
According to President Xi Jinping, the issue of protecting the ecological environment must be considered long-term and comprehensively, and cannot only look at immediate benefits. He once said: "People do not let down the green mountains, the green mountains will not let down people."

Another example of a green transition is the Lijiang River, which is famous for its scenic beauty. However, about 20 years ago, the river was heavily polluted by sewage and deforestation. In 2012, environmental restoration measures were taken, including closing polluting factories, removing unplanned fish farms, and helping aquaculture households transition to industries such as ecotourism and agriculture .

Local factories are also striving for sustainable development in the process of development. When inspecting a section of the Lijiang River two years ago, President Xi Jinping asserted that the river is a unique treasure of China and the world , and its ecological environment must never be destroyed.

Another example of green transformation is the Wushan area in Jiangsu Province. Located along the Yangtze River, it was once a cargo port with sulfur and iron ore piled up in the open. Since 2016, however, ecological restoration projects have been launched, closing more than 200 polluting factories and demolishing 65,000 square meters of illegal structures. The 12-kilometer riverbank has been restored to lush green.

These efforts not only help protect the environment but also create new opportunities for sustainable economic development. In doing so, China is gradually demonstrating that green transformation is not only a responsibility but also an opportunity to improve the quality of life for future generations.
