Asserting number 1 class

Following his stellar performance at the PGA Championship two weeks ago, Scottie Scheffler once again showed his brilliance at the challenging Muirfield Village course. Leading from the first round, the American golfer did not allow his opponent to significantly reduce the gap, closing out the tournament with a cool and convincing victory.

Scoring -2 (70 strokes) in the final round, Scheffler won the championship with a total score of -10 (278 strokes), 4 strokes ahead of runner-up Ben Griffin. He was also the only golfer to score under par in all four rounds - a clear testament to his stability, courage and excellent control in difficult competition conditions.

More impressively, this was Scheffler's ninth consecutive win as he led after 54 holes - an achievement that would put even the greatest legends to shame.

With this victory, Scheffler became the second person in history, after Tiger Woods, to successfully defend the Memorial Tournament title. Woods achieved the feat with three consecutive championships (1999–2001) and owns a total of five titles at Muirfield Village.

Scheffler has won three of his last four tournaments, including the PGA Championship. The only exception was Colonial, where he tied for fourth. This is also the 16th PGA Tour title of his career.

With such extraordinary performance, experts do not hesitate to call Scheffler a “winning machine”. At the present time, he is the brightest name next to the legendary Tiger Woods in terms of both dominance and stature in the modern era.

Dramatic until the last minute

Despite the win, Scheffler's Memorial Tournament final was not a perfect round. He had no birdies in his first four holes. After a bogey on the 10th, his only error in the last 40 holes, he was just one stroke behind Ben Griffin.

However, the world's number one immediately spoke up. At the par-5 11th hole, Scheffler continued to make a beautiful birdie putt from more than 4.5 meters away, while Griffin - only 1.2 meters from the flag - unfortunately missed.

On the next two holes, Griffin missed the green and made bogey, while Scheffler maintained his form with a par. The gap quickly returned to four strokes, and any hope of a comeback for Griffin was almost gone.

“I was very happy with only one bogey on this course,” Scheffler said. “I hit a lot of fairways and barely got into the rough. That’s very important at Muirfield Village.”

Griffin continued to put pressure on with a spectacular eagle from 12 feet at hole 15 and a birdie at hole 16 with a putt of over 25 feet. The gap was reduced to 2 strokes with only two holes remaining.

But Scheffler did not give his opponent any more chances when he hit the fairway and green on both the last two holes to keep par. Griffin, on the other hand, had a double bogey on hole 17 due to mental stress.

“I’m proving that I really deserve to be at the top of the sport ,” Griffin said. “I’ve won twice in the last five weeks and I’ve had a great feeling about this tournament. Today I was ready to celebrate again, but I just didn’t perform as well as I expected.”

Griffin finished with a final-round 73, finishing second with a total score of under 6 and earning $2.2 million, more than he won for winning Colonial last week. Sepp Straka finished third with a total score of under 5 (283).

“I always knew Scottie was going to play well. He never gave up, he was always solid and kept the score up,” Straka said. “I had a few chances to put pressure on him, but I just couldn’t take advantage of it.”
