The tournament took place in Bangkok with the participation of hundreds of young players of all ages from 11 Southeast Asian countries and many guest delegations, including China, India, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.
These are real chess festivals when young players in the region and continent have the opportunity to compete, learn and exchange cultures, in addition to accumulating benchmark points to be awarded international titles by FIDE.
Southeast Asian Youth Tournament brings together hundreds of young players
With a strong force consisting of most of the top players in the age groups from 8 to 20, both male and female, the Vietnamese youth chess team made a very strong impression at the tournament.
During the first six days of competition with 9 standard chess games, Vietnamese players continuously led the rankings and won all the highest rankings - including silver and bronze medals - in 13/14 events with a total of 30 individual and team gold medals!
In many events, Vietnamese players won all 5-10 highest individual rankings.
The only group that did not name a Vietnamese player in the highest position was the U18 men's age group when the trio Ngo Duc Tri, Pham Tran Gia Phuc, Dao Minh Nhat had to "give way" to opponents from the Philippines, Quizon Daniels (individual gold medal), Concio Michael Junior (individual silver medal)...
Player Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong has an additional female grandmaster standard in addition to 2 gold medals.
Not only winning the individual and team gold medals in the U20 women's age group, G20 player Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong also won a female grandmaster (WGM) standard. Not only did the Vietnamese youth chess team introduce the three youngest Southeast Asian champions (Tran Hoang Bao An in the U8 women's category and Nguyen Nhat Khuong and Nguyen Xuan Phuong - gold medalists in the U8 men's category), they also introduced the U14 women's champion Mai Hieu Linh, who is also the FIDE Women's Grandmaster (WFM), the daughter of two former national cyclists Mai Cong Hieu and Vu Hong Thuy.
