The Champions League final could generate huge revenue for the city of Munich. |
On June 1 (Vietnam time), Munich became the center of European football when it hosted the UEFA Champions League final between PSG and Inter Milan. But it was not just a sporting event, according to Mastercard research, the top match also brought a great economic impact to the Bavarian city.
Major football events always generate a surge in spending, especially from international tourists . For example, last season's final in London between Real Madrid and Dortmund saw foreign tourist spending increase 67 times compared to normal levels.
In Berlin, the Euro 2024 final also helped revenue from restaurants and bars within a 3km radius of the stadium skyrocket by 130%, with international visitors spending more than 20 times higher than normal days.
Not only football, Munich has witnessed positive economic effects from concerts by big stars like Adele or Taylor Swift. These concerts increased hotel and accommodation revenue by 40 to 57%, showing the strong attraction of large-scale events to the local economy.
Natalia Lechmanova, an economist at Mastercard, said that sporting events not only attract fans but also boost regional economies, creating many development opportunities for businesses around the stadium.
Notably, according to a survey by Mastercard, more than half of Europeans believe that watching live football, in addition to bringing excitement, also helps increase bonding and strengthen relationships between friends and relatives.
