On April 9, e-commerce platform Lazada released the report Closing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Gap: Perceptions and Trends in AI Application by Online Sellers in Southeast Asia.
The report was conducted by Lazada and Kantar, based on a survey of 1,214 online sellers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The study found that online sellers in Southeast Asia have some familiarity with AI, with nearly 7 in 10 (68%) claiming to have some knowledge of AI. In Vietnam, this figure is nearly 8 in 10 sellers (77%), higher than the regional average.
Sellers in the Southeast Asian market believe they have integrated AI into about 47% of their online business operations, but the actual figure is only 37%.
Although this gap also appears in Vietnam (42% practical application vs. 53%), online sellers in Vietnam are still among the region's leaders in AI adoption.
In Vietnam, sellers generally have a positive view of the benefits of AI (94%), especially in boosting productivity, and they are also less concerned about cost and time issues (35%).

Across the region, Vietnam and Indonesia lead the way with AI adoption accounting for 42% of business operations, followed closely by Singapore and Thailand at 39%.
Based on the level of AI application in 5 core aspects of seller business operations, namely operations and logistics, product management, marketing and advertising, customer service, human resource management, the report classifies 3 separate groups of sellers.
First, AI-savvy sellers have integrated AI into at least 80% of their business operations. In Vietnam, only about 22% of sellers fall into this group compared to 24% in the region.
Second, sellers interested in AI. These are those who have integrated some AI into their business operations, but are still struggling to actually apply AI in important stages. Up to 64% of sellers in Vietnam belong to this segment (compared to 50% in Southeast Asia).
Sellers cautious about AI, this group accounts for the remaining 14% of the total number of sellers surveyed in Vietnam (compared to 26% in Southeast Asia), they are lagging in AI application, with most steps in business operations still handled manually.
