Striving to become the largest metallurgical center in the country
Dak Nong is one of the localities with rich and diverse natural resources, with 218 mines and mining points, including 16 types of minerals with large reserves and high economic value. Of which, the largest bauxite reserve in the country is estimated at 5.4 billion tons. Most of the bauxite ores are located at altitudes above groundwater, surface water and open-pit, so it is very convenient for exploitation.
According to Decision No. 167/2007/QD-TTg dated November 1, 2007 of the Prime Minister on approving the Zoning Plan for exploration, exploitation, processing and use of bauxite ore in the period of 2007 - 2015, with a view to 2025, bauxite in Dak Nong is planned into 13 mining areas, with forecast reserves and resources of about 1.436 billion tons of ore concentrate, equivalent to 3.425 billion tons of raw ore, aluminum content reaching over 40%. Up to now, Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV) has conducted exploration in 7 mining areas and has been appraised and approved by the National Mineral Reserves Council with a total explored area of 1,605 km2; accounting for 24.6% of the total area of the province, the total approved reserves and resources of ore concentrate are nearly 993 million tons. The Nhan Co alumina factory project invested by TKV with a capacity of 650,000 tons of alumina/year was built in February 2010 and is one of two large-scale pilot projects.

The Resolution of the Dak Nong Provincial Party Committee for the 2020-2025 term has identified the development of the alumina and aluminum smelting industry as one of the three pillars of the local economy. Dak Nong strives to become the largest metallurgical center in the country by 2030. At the meeting in August 2023 between the Standing Committee of the Dak Nong Provincial Party Committee and the State Capital Management Committee at Enterprises and TKV, Mr. Ngo Thanh Danh, Secretary of the Dak Nong Provincial Party Committee, affirmed: "The province only wants to make a breakthrough in development with bauxite. Therefore, the locality will study and develop a special mechanism for the development of the bauxite - alumina - aluminum industry in Dak Nong".
Dak Nong province planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Dak Nong aims to become a locality with a dynamic and sustainable economy in the Central Highlands by 2030. Industry is the driving force for growth, making Dak Nong a national bauxite - aluminum and post-aluminum industrial center; a renewable energy center of the region; and a resort and ecological tourism center.

In April 2024, TKV worked with the Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee on the implementation of bauxite projects in the province. According to the project "Overall development of TKV's bauxite - alumina - aluminum sector to 2030, with a vision to 2045", in Dak Nong province, TKV will invest in expanding the capacity of the Nhan Co alumina complex to about 2 million tons of alumina/year; invest in a new Dak Nong 2 bauxite - alumina - aluminum complex with a capacity of 2 million tons of alumina/year and 0.5 - 1 million tons of aluminum/year. TKV will also implement 2 exploration projects and 5 bauxite - alumina - aluminum projects with a total estimated investment of over 182,000 billion VND. To prepare for the implementation of upcoming projects in Dak Nong, TKV has developed resource plans for investment capital; Spending nearly 1,000 billion VND to explore bauxite mines, meeting the implementation of alumina - aluminum projects in the province...

Great opportunity to develop renewable energy
Besides bauxite minerals, Dak Nong also has great potential for renewable energy. According to the draft report on the Power Plan VIII of the Institute of Energy, Dak Nong has the technical potential for ground-mounted solar power of 59,010 MW, wind power of 6,318 MW (wind speed 2.5 - 6 m/s), biomass power of 116 MW... Up to now, Dak Nong has put into operation 2 solar power projects with a total capacity of 106 MWp (Cu Jut and Truc Son solar power), 1 wind power project with a capacity of 50 MW (Dak Hoa wind power). The province has proposed to supplement the planning of 10 solar power projects with a capacity of 872 MWp and 14 wind power projects with a total capacity of 1,004 MW. In addition, there are 22 hydropower plants in operation with a total capacity of 1,640 MW...

With its natural resources, Dak Nong province has determined to promote the development of alumina and aluminum smelting industries; at the same time, it focuses on expanding the scale and increasing the proportion of wind power, solar power, and biomass power, creating momentum to shift the province's economic structure towards industrialization and modernization, narrowing the economic gap compared to other localities in the Central Highlands and the whole country. Along with proactively proposing and approaching new economic development policies of the Central Government, the province also implements the policy of exploiting non-state resources by policies to attract large, strategic investors with strong financial potential to invest in large projects with socio-economic efficiency in the area.
