On this occasion, Vietnam's Lang Son Geopark, along with 15 other geoparks in the world , was honored. This is the first time UNESCO has held a ceremony to award global geopark certificates at its headquarters, in a combined in-person and online format. This demonstrates the growing interest of the international community in this prestigious title.

Attending the ceremony in person, Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, was honored and delighted to receive the Certificate of recognition of Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This document was signed by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and presented by Ms. Lidia Brito, Assistant Director-General in charge of Natural Sciences , at the ceremony. Representatives of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, along with leaders of the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion and relevant departments, agencies and sectors of Lang Son province also attended the event online.
Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh emphasized that UNESCO's official recognition of Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark is of great significance. This is a milestone that opens up many new opportunities for sustainable tourism development in Lang Son. At the same time, the province can connect deeply with the network of Global Geoparks, cooperate and exchange experiences in managing, preserving and promoting the values of human natural heritage for sustainable development. The Ambassador also affirmed that Lang Son Global Geopark with its unique, typical and outstanding geological values, cultural heritage, and natural landscapes will be a valuable addition to the UNESCO Global Geopark system.
Mr. Antonio De Sousa Abreu, Director of the Department of Ecology and Earth Sciences of UNESCO, said that Lang Son Geopark joining the Global Geoparks community is very important. According to him, the Global Geoparks program aims at sustainable development through the combination of natural resource conservation and supporting the development of local communities. Lang Son joining this network not only contributes to enhancing the identity of the region, but also promotes dialogue between scientists, policy makers, managers, communities and especially young people - who can find new and practical development opportunities in it.
Expressing his satisfaction with the positive working spirit from Vietnam, Mr. Kristof Vandenberghe, Head of UNESCO's Department of Earth Sciences and Geoparks, shared: "I was very impressed when meeting and working with the people in charge of the geopark, the local community, and the experts working at this geopark. We are extremely happy and proud to welcome Lang Son to become a UNESCO geopark, becoming part of the global geopark family. You are completely deserving! I hope Vietnam will do a good job of protecting heritage combined with respecting local traditions, whether it is geological heritage or biodiversity, and working together to manage water resources."
Established in 2015, the title of “UNESCO Global Geopark” recognizes the value of geological heritage of international stature. The UNESCO Global Geoparks Network currently has a total of 229 global geoparks in 50 countries. These parks serve local communities, combining the conservation of unique geological heritage, raising public awareness and promoting sustainable development.
Lang Son Geopark is the fourth geopark in Vietnam to be recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, previously Dong Van Karst Plateau was recognized in 2010, Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark was recognized in 2018 and Dak Nong Geopark was recognized in 2020.
