England will play their opening match of Euro 2028 at the Etihad. |
In previous major tournaments held in England (1966 World Cup, Euro 1996 and Euro 2020), all England matches took place in London, at Wembley Stadium. But according to the Euro 2028 schedule just announced, the "Three Lions" will open the group stage at Etihad Stadium (Manchester). This is the first time England has left the capital in a major tournament held on home soil.
After their opening match on June 10, England will return to Wembley for their next two games. If they top their group, they will travel to St James' Park (Newcastle) for the round of 16, before returning to Wembley for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final on July 9.
Euro 2028 will use five stadiums in England, including Wembley, Etihad, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Villa Park and Everton’s new stadium, Hill Dickinson Stadium. In addition, Cardiff (Wales), Glasgow (Scotland) and Dublin (Republic of Ireland) will also be co-hosts, each hosting four to five group stage matches and at least one knockout match.
A total of 51 matches will be held in 10 cities, with over 3 million tickets expected to be sold to fans worldwide. The UK government is investing £557 million in infrastructure and organization, with the tournament expected to bring a socio-economic impact of over £3.2 billion.
Debbie Hewitt, FA Chair and Head of Euro 2028, said: "The countdown begins to an unforgettable summer. We are committed to working with UEFA to deliver the most memorable Euro yet – a festival of football for the fans, passionate, engaging and sustainable."
According to UEFA, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland must play in the qualifying round, but there will be two reserve spots in case one of the four host teams cannot qualify officially.
