Gilberto Barbera, Bella Montoya’s son, told the AP on June 12 that his mother was unconscious when she was taken to the emergency room on June 10 and a few hours later, a doctor informed him that she had died and handed over her identification and death certificate.
The family took Mrs. Montoya to the funeral home, holding the funeral on June 10, but then they began to hear strange sounds.
"There were about 20 of us there. After about five hours of her waking up, the coffin started making sounds. My mother was wrapped in a shroud and she was banging on the coffin, and when we got closer, we could see she was breathing very heavily," Barbera said.

Although Mr. Barbera and his relatives took Ms. Montoya back to the hospital on June 10, by June 12, she was still in critical condition. “That scared all of us,” Mr. Barbera said.
Ecuador's Health Ministry said Ms Montoya was in intensive care at Martín Icaza hospital in the city of Babahoyo.
Ecuador's Health Ministry added that Ms. Montoya was initially admitted to the hospital on June 10 with a possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest, and when she did not respond to resuscitation, a doctor on duty declared her dead.
Ecuador's health ministry said it was investigating the doctors involved in Ms Montoya's case and a committee had been set up to review how the hospital issued the death certificate. No details have been released about the doctor who initially declared Ms Montoya dead.
