Pham Kieu Huyen once participated in Hanoi Singing but only won the "Promising" prize, so she was determined to win this year's competition. However, when she won first prize, the female army lieutenant born in 1999 was shocked.
On the evening of December 25, Pham Thi Huyen (stage name Pham Kieu Huyen) was awarded First Prize in the Folk Music category at the Hanoi Singing Contest 2024 for her excellent performance of the song Under the Porch (Under the Roof ) by Tran Khanh Ly. Pham Kieu Huyen said that on the night she received the award, she was so happy that she couldn't sleep because her talent was recognized at a quality award.
This is even more meaningful to the girl born in 1999 because this is the second time Pham Kieu Huyen has participated in the contest. Last year she only won the Promising award, so she is determined to prove herself in this year's contest.
Pham Kieu Huyen said that in the previous competition, she was not mature enough and did not have time to prepare well, so she only won a small prize, so this year she is determined to take revenge. However, she did not think that Hanoi Singing 2024 would have more than 700 participants, many strong candidates, so it would put pressure on the 25-year-old girl.
Pham Kieu Huyen had to carefully calculate the song selection as well as the strategy and steps to be more successful than last year. And she was right when she gradually eliminated the strong opponents and became 1 of 15 contestants in the final night and the folk music genre she chose had only a few people. Thinking back, Pham Kieu Huyen still feels scared.
As a professionally and meticulously organized competition, it has become a launching pad for many famous singers today, so for Pham Kieu Huyen, participating in Hanoi Singing 2024 is the fastest and most effective way for the girl who is working at the Border Guard Art Troupe to affirm her name and reach a large audience.
Winning this competition is even more meaningful to Pham Kieu Huyen, to show that she has the qualities and is not unrealistic, and is also the foundation for others to evaluate Huyen's singing voice. "The competition helps me know where I am. I am determined to improve, make efforts and finally succeed with my own ability," the female singer shared.
Pham Kieu Huyen shared that before participating in Hanoi Singing Voice 2024, she did not have much time to practice because her work in the army was busy with commemorative activities as well as defense exhibitions. Huyen shared that there were times when she could not sleep because of anxiety because she was a contestant in the competition last year, if she did not win this time, she would be disappointed in herself.
Even when she re-entered the competition, Pham Kieu Huyen did not think she would win first prize. For her, "just getting a prize is good enough." However, the deeper she went, the stronger her determination became. Once on stage, she was calm, confident and told herself to do her best. That is why when she saw her name called for first prize in the Folk Music category, Pham Kieu Huyen was so happy that she couldn't sleep. She admitted that she was a bit "shocked" even though her victory was recognized by experts.
Receiving a prize of 100 million VND, but for Pham Kieu Huyen, winning first prize is more important. "When you have decided to enter a competition, if you do not invest in your lessons, costumes and everything, you cannot win against your friends and thus have lost from the start, not to mention the competition. The prize money is quite large, but when I go to a competition, I do not care about material things," Pham Kieu Huyen said.
The singer has gone through many difficulties to get to where she is today. Pham Kieu Huyen used to be a civilian candidate and after a while of striving to become a soldier. Her family situation was also difficult, because of the lack of conditions, Pham Kieu Huyen always strived. Joining the Border Guard Art Troupe was very difficult, but she always tried to bring her singing and humanistic values as well as artistic values to beautify life. "In addition to working professionally, I always think about doing art with all my heart," she said.
With today's success, Pham Kieu Huyen does not forget those who taught and helped her. During the 4 years studying at the Military Arts School, Ms. Tang Quynh Nga was the one who directly guided Pham Kieu Huyen, laying the first foundation for her to step out into the profession. When she became a soldier in the Border Art Troupe, Pham Kieu Huyen matured in both her style and personality through training by the army.
Coming to the Hanoi Singing Contest, Pham Kieu Huyen got to know Meritorious Artist Ngoc Dung. She shared: "She was always there to help and teach me closely without caring about anything. She was the one who exploited my qualities. Because before that, someone had told me straight that I had no ability and should stop.
But Ms. Dung understood me, exploited me and taught me wholeheartedly. It was thanks to her that I had such good results. Besides, there was also People's Artist Huynh Tu, the composer and arranger of the competition. He exploited the strengths in my voice as well as the brightest corners in my voice and technique to have the best performance. And finally, I have to thank Hanoi Radio for creating a quality music playground."
Pham Kieu Huyen said her direction after the Hanoi Singing Contest 2024 is to move towards a professional music career and bigger competitions. Her goal is to develop and become Sao Mai because it suits the folk music genre she pursues. "Making mainstream music easier to listen to while still maintaining the essence of folk music and making folk music reach more young people is my goal," Pham Kieu Huyen said.
