Comrade Hoang Dinh Giong, a Tay ethnic, was born on June 1, 1904 in a family with a tradition of patriotism and studiousness in Thom Hoang village, Ha Hoang commune, then moved to Na Toan village, Xuan Phach commune, Hoa An district, now De Tham ward (City). He had a deep patriotism, soon absorbed and spread Marxism-Leninism, the revolutionary ideology of Leader Nguyen Ai Quoc to Cao Bang and became the first communist of the province. He was an excellent student of President Ho Chi Minh , an outstanding son of the Vietnamese people and his homeland Cao Bang.

Throughout his life, Comrade Hoang Dinh Giong struggled and sacrificed for the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, always putting the interests of the Party and the nation above all else. He was an example of loyalty, indomitability, a simple and pure lifestyle, close to the masses, and was especially loved, admired and respected by the masses. In recognition of his outstanding contributions and achievements, in 1998, the Party and State posthumously awarded him the Ho Chi Minh Medal; in 2009, he was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the People's Armed Forces; in 2018, he was recognized as an outstanding senior leader of the Party and the Vietnamese revolution.

In order to record the life and glorious revolutionary activities of comrade Hoang Dinh Giong, in 2022, the National Political Publishing House Truth published the book Hoang Dinh Giong - Biography. The book belongs to the Program of collecting documents and writing biographies of outstanding senior leaders of the Party and the Vietnamese revolution. The book was selected and compiled by professors, doctors, and historical researchers, 308 pages thick, with a structure of 6 chapters recording the life and revolutionary career of comrade Hoang Dinh Giong.

Chapter 1: Introduction to his hometown, family and first patriotic activities (1904-1927). Hoang Dinh Giong was born into a family with a strong patriotic spirit and a tradition of studiousness, which instilled in Hoang Dinh Giong a spirit of patriotism and resistance to foreign invaders, and he soon followed the path of revolutionary struggle for national independence following the example of his predecessors. Since he was a student at Bach Nghe School (Hanoi), Hoang Dinh Giong actively participated in the patriotic movement of Hanoi students; participated in organizing the memorial service for patriot Phan Chu Trinh and was expelled from school. In 1927, he went abroad to work, and in 1928 he was admitted to the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association founded by Nguyen Ai Quoc.

Chapter 2: Describes the process of growing up during the movement to establish the Party (1927 - 1930). As an excellent and enthusiastic young man, Hoang Dinh Giong propagated and taught training courses for cadres. With his extensive knowledge and inspiring and easy-to-understand teaching methods, he clarified many theoretical issues, helping students understand deeply, remember for a long time, and practice easily. In December 1929, comrade Hoang Dinh Giong was admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party and was elected Secretary of the Overseas Party Cell in Long Chau, China. He directed the organization and development of the revolutionary movement in Cao Bang and Lang Son; directed the establishment of the first Party Cell of Cao Bang province on April 1, 1930 in Nam Lin, Hoang Tung commune, Hoa An district.

In Chapter 3 of the book, it tells about the time when comrade Hoang Dinh Giong became a leading cadre of the Central Party. After the Communist Party of Vietnam was born, the revolutionary movement of the Vietnamese people entered a period of strong development. During the years 1932 - 1935, comrade Hoang Dinh Giong operated in Cao Bang, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, directly leading the restoration and development of Party organizations in the localities. In 1935, he was the head of the delegation of the Northern Regional Party Committee attending the First Congress of the Party in Macau (China). He was elected to the Central Committee of the Indochinese Communist Party (term I), in charge of the Northern Regional Party Committee. From February 1936, he was arrested by the French colonialists and exiled to Madagascar (Africa). Despite suffering many tortures from the colonialists, comrade Hoang Dinh Giong always maintained the spirit and steadfast, indomitable character of a communist soldier. At the Hai Phong Secret Service, after being brutally tortured, he still resolutely and firmly answered in front of the Chief of the Secret Service: "We live and fight for the noble purpose of repelling the invaders and reclaiming our country. We do not fight civilized France, we do not fight the French people who love freedom, justice, and charity, but only fight the invading French colonialists. We stand up to fight for the legitimate rights and survival of our nation. In the life-and-death struggle between us, the people who lost our country, and you, the people who usurped our country, it is natural that I was arrested and sacrificed for a just cause."

In Chapters 4 and 5 of the book, it tells about the struggle, training in the imperial prison, participating in the struggle to gain and protect the revolutionary government of comrade Hoang Dinh Giong. In October 1944, escaping from the colonial prison, returning to Cao Bang, he continued to lead the revolutionary movement, as the Head of the August Revolution Uprising Committee in 1945 in Cao Bang. The revolution succeeded, he was assigned to command the army to the South to support the Southern battlefield; Uncle Ho named him Vo Van Duc with the meaning of both literature and martial arts. He held the following positions: Chief of the Political Department (Political Commissar) of the Southern Liberation Army, Minister of Zone 9, Minister of Zone 6.

In his positions, comrade Hoang Dinh Giong contributed to organizing, building and developing the armed forces of the South; building the U Minh base; solving the problem of national unity between the Vietnamese and Khmer people, religious unity, and defeating the French colonialists' plot to divide the nation and religion. He left a deep impression on the Khmer people, and was loved, respected and affectionately called "Cu Vu" (ie "Mr. Vu Duc"). In 1947, he heroically sacrificed himself in a battle in Ninh Thuan province.

The last chapter of the book talks about the shining example of a talented communist who fought and sacrificed his whole life for the goals and ideals of the Party and the nation. One of the first communists of Cao Bang, the leader of the movement to establish a party organization in Cao Bang and the northern border area, the person who made an important contribution to restoring the party organization system and the revolutionary movement in Bac Ky, a talented military commander of the Party and the Vietnamese revolution. Regardless of his position, from Commander of the Southern Army, Political Commissar of the Southern Liberation Army, Minister (Commander) of Zone 9, Zone 6, with his courage and clear intelligence, comrade Hoang Dinh Giong always proposed correct policies on the military, political, diplomatic fronts..., building a people's war posture, together with the army and people of the South, defeating the plot of "fighting fast, winning fast" of the French colonialists.

Although his 43-year life was not long, it was full of achievements and pride. He fought until his last breath and went down in history. An excellent leader, a military commander with great courage and experience, devoted his whole life to the cause of national liberation and the happiness of the people. To commemorate and express gratitude for his great contributions, the Party Committee and the people of all ethnic groups in Cao Bang erected a monument and a memorial site for him in Na Toan village, De Tham ward (City). The Party School of Cao Bang province and a street in the city center were named after him. Many localities built memorial steles and named him on large and beautiful streets named after Hoang Dinh Giong.

Comrade Hoang Dinh Giong devoted his entire life to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, devoting all his intelligence and strength to the Party and the Vietnamese revolution. He became a shining example of revolutionary will, loyalty, solidarity, sense of organization and discipline, readiness to fight and sacrifice for the Party's ideals, for the bright future of the revolution for future generations to learn and follow.

The book is a traditional educational material, useful research material for scientists and readers interested in studying history in general, and the life and revolutionary career of comrade Hoang Dinh Giong - an outstanding son of his homeland Cao Bang.
