After his grandmother passed away, he was curious about the mysterious names in her notebook, such as Z5, B8, R2… Hai Duong, a young reporter for a newspaper, decided to look for them to learn more about his grandmother. And then Hai Duong found Mr. Tram Tu, who was his grandmother’s comrade in the Saigon Special Forces. From here, he learned about the heroic stories of previous generations in the resistance war against America and he also got to know Thy Mai, Mr. Tu’s granddaughter. The stories of the past were revealed…
The 11 chapters are written alternately about 2 generations: the story of Thy Mai's grandfather, Hai Duong's grandmother, Mrs. Huynh Mai and the story of Hai Duong, Thy Mai and her friends. If the stories in the past make readers excited, following the brave and loyal revolutionary soldiers fighting with the enemy; then in the present, the love stories and work of young people bring freshness, cuteness, mixed with a bit of wit and humor. The layers of emotions intertwined with the familiar writing style make readers captivated through each page of the book. In particular, the love story of 2 generations with many differences in wartime and peacetime is the most attractive element of the work.
The love between Mr. Tu and Mrs. Huynh Mai is pure and lasting because they not only have love between a man and a woman but also love for their country and comradeship, so even though they were separated by war, when they met again after 50 years, their feelings and respect for each other were still intact. Their first and only kiss under the umbrella tree was not because of love but because of duty, in the midst of a dilemma before the enemy, it was still a beautiful kiss in everyone's heart. As for the love between Hai Duong and Thy Mai, although it had just begun, it also had the beauty of youth because they had the same soul, interests and journalism.
The article “Under the canopy of Saigon” by Thy Mai is about the breathtaking encounter between two commandos and the enemy - featuring two real characters, her grandfather and Mrs. Huynh Mai. The article is like a gratitude and respect of the youth for the silent heroes of the years 1965-1968. The article has a strong influence on students and the exchange with the two main characters in the article makes the younger generation even more emotional and proud. Because as Hai Duong thinks: “Any young person should seek out and listen to stories about their ancestors, to appreciate the peaceful air they breathe every day. And don’t be indifferent to the soul of the city” (page 90).
Author Nguyen Khac Cuong is currently Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper, in charge of the Purple Ink and Red Scarf publications. With his extensive experience, he depicts in detail the characteristics of journalism as well as the enthusiasm and love for the profession through the characters Hai Duong and Thy Mai in this novel. Hai Duong's advice to Thy Mai: "Your pen name is Suong Mai, learn to let go like a dew drop, it knows how to refuse the glitter to understand the depths of the earth" is not only for the female student who is practicing writing for the newspaper, but also a meaningful message for those who are working in journalism.
