Saving a critically ill drowning patient

On June 5, specialist doctor II Le Tran Anh Thi - Director of the 115 Emergency Center said that the center's emergency team had just provided timely first aid and saved the life of patient PH (born in 1947, Nha Trang City) who was drowning in critical condition.

Accordingly, on the afternoon of June 4, the 115 Emergency Center received an urgent call from the Nha Trang beach area (opposite Ly Tu Trong Street) reporting that a patient was in critical condition, suspected of drowning. Immediately, the emergency team including medic Tran Thai Hoc, medic Nguyen Thi Kieu Oanh and driver Nguyen Quang Thang were dispatched to the scene. During the process of moving to the scene, the 115 Emergency Team contacted the nearby marine rescue team to assist in performing external cardiac compressions on the patient. When the emergency team arrived at the scene, patient H. was in a deep coma, gasping for breath, purple lips and chest, irregular heartbeat, large amount of oral secretions; vital signs were almost gone, blood pressure could not be measured, the patient fell into a state of circulatory arrest, respiratory arrest outside the hospital - suspected of drowning.

The patient was treated at the Emergency Department of the Provincial General Hospital.

The 115 emergency team urgently performed chest compressions, intubated, pumped the balloon through the endotracheal tube, established an IV line, and administered cardiac arrest medication. Thanks to the smooth and precise coordination between the marine rescue team and the 115 emergency team, the patient was transferred to the Emergency Department of the Provincial General Hospital with his heart beating again, pulse 140 times/minute, blood pressure 120/80mmHg, SpO2 = 75%. At the Emergency Department, the doctors continued to closely monitor the patient's condition and put him on a ventilator. After about 30 minutes of intensive resuscitation and interdisciplinary consultation, the patient regained consciousness and was able to breathe well on his own. The patient was transferred to the Department of Geriatric Cardiology for monitoring and treatment. By 8:00 p.m. the same day, the patient's health had improved and he was responding well to treatment.
