How does the Ambassador assess the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and South Africa within the framework of the P4G 2025 agenda?
South Africa is actively cooperating with Vietnam within the framework of bilateral memorandums of understanding in many areas agreed upon by both sides. At the same time, South Africa also highly appreciates Vietnam's initiative in implementing the Vietnam Startup Ecosystem Prospects Report.
Within the framework of the P4G Summit, South Africa is ready to learn best practices to support the micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) community towards sustainable and environmentally friendly development.
One of the major challenges facing the MSME community is access to finance, so South Africa is open to discussing innovative financing solutions that can be applied in its own country.
South Africa is currently implementing the Just Energy Transition Programme (JETP). Vietnam is also making significant strides in accelerating the energy transition. This could be a potential area of cooperation between the two countries, and is also in line with the P4G agenda, including Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) - renewable energy, which is one of South Africa's top priorities.
According to the global ranking of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) implementation index announced in 2024, Vietnam scored 73.32 and ranked 54th out of 166 ranked countries. (Source: Green Edu) |
What are the opportunities for South African businesses to participate in public-private partnership projects under P4G in Vietnam, Ambassador?
The P4G focuses on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, with South Africa prioritizing Goals 2, 6 and 7 in Phase Two. The P4G agenda aims to provide MSMEs with access to financial support to promote green and sustainable business development. At the same time, P4G also provides MSMEs with opportunities to learn technical expertise, helping them build their capacity and move towards financial scale-up.
In addition, the MSME community is also connected to international markets through webinars and summits, thereby contributing to affirming South Africa's position as an important hub in the field of green growth.
In the medium to long term, this will help build a green business force, enabling them to grow into medium and large companies, while driving the South African economy towards low-carbon and sustainable growth.
South Africa is one of the pioneering countries in green technology and sustainable development. Could you share your country’s policies and practical experiences in mitigating climate change and developing renewable energy with an inclusive, people-centered approach that Vietnam can apply?
South Africa established the Presidential Commission on Climate Change during its 6th government term. In 2021, at the COP26 Summit, South Africa officially announced the JETP Program.
As it enters its seventh government term in 2024, South Africa has enacted the National Climate Change Act to reinforce its commitment to sustainable development.
South Africa has launched the JETP Investment Plan to transition to a low-carbon economy and build a climate-resilient society, with key goals including: creating high-quality jobs, enhancing national energy security, mitigating climate change risks and promoting economic growth.
The International Partnership Group (IPG), comprising France, Germany, the UK, the European Union and the US, along with other countries such as the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Canada and Switzerland, has pledged to support South Africa in its energy transition. This support focuses on developing the electricity sector, green hydrogen and new energy vehicles, helping South Africa gradually reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

The JETP program is committed to making the transition equitable, ensuring participation and support for disadvantaged groups. JETP also supports the MSME community through policies on skills training, access to finance, capacity building and value chain development for new business opportunities.
The G20 aims to promote strong, sustainable and inclusive growth. South Africa has therefore chosen the theme for its G20 Presidency as “Solidarity, Equity and Sustainability”.
South Africa's foreign policy towards the G20 focuses on four main pillars: (1) promoting national interests to achieve domestic development goals (2) enhancing the African agenda and promoting sustainable development of the continent (3) promoting South-South cooperation, strengthening relations between developing countries (4) shaping the global multilateral architecture, ensuring the interests of developing countries through North-South dialogue.
South Africa’s participation in the G20 enables it to provide strategic direction to build a fairer, more representative and more responsive international order for developing countries within key multilateral institutions such as the United Nations. South Africa has played and will continue to play an important role in championing the interests of developing countries in the G20, ensuring that the G20 is responsive to the needs of emerging economies, developing countries in Africa and countries of the Global South.
There are many opportunities for South Africa and Vietnam to cooperate and share experiences in climate change mitigation and renewable energy development in an inclusive and people-centred manner. The two countries could consider bilateral exchanges to promote South-South cooperation in the strategic areas mentioned earlier.
Thank you very much Ambassador.
The Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) High-level Forum was established in 2017 on the basis of an initiative of the Danish government, formerly known as the Global Green Growth Forum (3GF). To date, the P4G Forum has 12 member countries including: Denmark, Chile, Mexico, Vietnam, Korea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Colombia, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Indonesia and South Africa with the participation of more than 90 countries, international organizations and businesses. P4G is considered the world's leading forum for promoting public-private partnerships, connecting governments, businesses and socio -political organizations to jointly develop breakthrough solutions for green growth, contributing to the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). P4G's support to partner countries is mainly through public-private partnerships, providing financial and technical support for small and micro enterprises to implement activities to respond to climate change. |
