In an era where technology permeates every corner of life, children’s reading habits are also changing. Notably, historical and cultural books, after a period of stagnation, have made a strong comeback, attracting not only children but also parents who choose to “read with their children” to connect and inspire.

Choose books more and more carefully

Taking a look around the bookshelves of prestigious publishers such as Kim Dong, Thai Ha, Nha Nam,Education Publishing House, Literature Publishing House... it is easy to see that children's books occupy a solemn position, not only rich in form of expression, but also diverse in content.

From classic literature for children, to history books, foreign comics, science and technology, life skills education... all are invested in more and more systematically and professionally. A parent shared that before deciding to buy books for her children, she often spends time researching on social networking sites. She carefully reads reviews to grasp the content as well as the value of the book.

Only after having a relatively clear choice did she make a decision. For her, choosing books for her children was not just buying a product but choosing a companion.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Chieu Xuan, Director of Lionbooks Publishing Company, compared to a few years ago, parents today tend to choose books more carefully. They no longer buy books based on emotions or because they are cheap, but pay attention to both the quality of content and form.

“Parents today are no longer as lenient with thin books, bad paper, spelling mistakes or sketchy presentation as before. They focus on books with educational value, beautiful form, neat presentation, standard writing style and most importantly, must bring real experiences to their children,” Ms. Chieu Xuan affirmed.

Increasing competition in the publishing industry also forces publishers to make more efforts to innovate and improve quality, in order to conquer young readers. Creative products with real value will be welcomed by the market.

When asked about the changing trends in the form of children's books, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chieu Xuan said that books today are not only for reading, but also provide vivid experiences, contributing to awakening children's senses.

Interactive books such as audio books, water books, coloring books, and pop-up books have brought a breath of fresh air to the market. Children, especially preschoolers, especially love this type of book. However, the price of interactive books is still quite high because production in Vietnam is not really optimal.

Furthermore, unique experiences cannot replace good content. A good book is a combination of quality content, beautiful form and sustainable use value.

Encouraging growth signals

A notable point that many publishing companies have noticed recently is the return of Vietnamese history and culture books. According to a representative of Lionbooks, young parents are increasingly interested in learning about history, customs, and cultural identity, contributing to fostering love for the homeland and national pride for the young generations.

Books about traditions, famous people, places, holidays, etc. are chosen more. This is a good sign. Sales of this book series also grow steadily by double digits every year.

According to Ms. Ngo Huong Thao - owner of the bookstore Nhung Sao - in addition to the popular historical and cultural books, parents now tend to look for books that are practical and effective for their children's development. Among them, books that teach life skills and books about successful businessmen stand out.

This is a positive signal, but also poses a significant challenge in maintaining a true reading culture - where books are not only tools, but also spiritual friends, a space for children to grow up with a more comprehensive understanding of the world and themselves.

Many parents worry about how to make their children love books in a world filled with screens. According to Ms. Ngo Huong Thao, there are two factors that make children passionate about books. The first is the environment. If children grow up in a family with a reading culture, parents often tell stories and read with their children, children will naturally love books.

Parents are the ones who inspire reading most strongly, not by words but by concrete actions. Second is the role of book makers. Books need to be constantly innovated. The content must be close but creative, the form must be beautiful and arouse children's curiosity. If books can bring an experience as interesting as technological devices, children will certainly not be indifferent to books.

The key to success

Writer and poet Ho Huy Son - a writer of many stories and poems for children - affirms that clarity, uniqueness and the ability to evoke imagination are the decisive factors for the success of a literary work written for children.

“The poems I have written recently always try to bring innocence and freshness. I want children to feel like they are adventuring in their own world,” author Ho Huy Son expressed. Thanks to that mindset, his works have been warmly received by parents as a beautiful gift in their children’s childhood journey.

Admitting that children's literature is facing fierce competition with many other forms of entertainment, writer Ho Huy Son still firmly believes that if written with true love, with an understanding of children's psychology, and with an attractive, modern writing style, literature can still touch children's hearts and have a special place in today's diverse world of books.

“It is not until now that people talk about the role of literature in shaping children's personalities. Since ancient times, literary stories have contributed to sowing seeds of kindness in children's souls. Children still need kind stories, still need magical but familiar worlds, and especially need characters in which they can reflect themselves,” the writer affirmed.

According to writer Ho Huy Son, through observation, children who are exposed to literary works from an early age often have better language skills, clear speech and a rich vocabulary.

But more importantly, children also develop emotions, understanding, compassion, and tolerance through the characters and stories that have accompanied them since childhood. Literature not only teaches children how to express themselves, but also teaches them how to listen, share, and feel the beauty of life around them. These emotions will grow over the years, becoming a part of their personality later on.

There is no general formula for conquering young readers. But certainly, carefulness, understanding and responsibility in each word are indispensable for anyone who wants to accompany children through books.
