Iranian Foreign Minister Abbbas Araqchi expressed satisfaction with the progress of nuclear negotiations with the US, saying both sides showed "seriousness and determination".
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the talks were “more serious” than previous ones. The US and Iran still have major and minor disagreements. Iran’s defense and missile capabilities were not discussed.
An Iranian negotiator told Tasnim news agency that the talks revolved only around sanctions and the nuclear issue.
The two sides previously held two rounds of indirect negotiations in Muscat (Oman) on April 12 and Rome (Italy) on April 19, and were both assessed to have achieved “positive” results.
The fourth round of talks between the US and Iran on a potential nuclear deal is expected to take place next week, with high-level talks on May 3, according to Oman's foreign minister.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi said there is a possibility that experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will participate in the upcoming round of talks at a location decided by Oman.
Earlier the same day, Iranian media reported that at least four people were killed and more than 500 injured in an explosion at Iran's largest commercial port in the Shahid Rajaee area of Hormozgan province in the south of the country.
A spokesman for Iran's crisis management agency said the cause of the explosion was likely due to unsafe storage conditions of chemicals in containers at the port.
In a notable reaction to the incident, Israel's Channel 12 this afternoon quoted a number of Israeli officials affirming that Tel Aviv had absolutely nothing to do with the explosion that occurred in Iran.
