Early morning of May 16, the world coffee market recorded mixed developments when Robusta prices continued to fall sharply, while Arabica prices increased sharply on the New York floor.
Specifically, the price of Robusta coffee for delivery in July 2025 on the London floor decreased by 39 USD/ton to 4,971 USD/ton (equivalent to about 127,800 VND/kg), down 1,000 VND/kg compared to the previous session.
Before the floor opened, domestic coffee prices also dropped sharply to 126,100 VND/kg, down 2,400 VND/kg. Prices are expected to continue to fall.
In contrast, the price of Arabica futures for July 2025 delivery jumped by another 220 USD/ton to 8,270 USD/ton, up 2.8%.
However, the current price level is still low compared to the peak set in mid-February 2025: Robusta reached 5,821 USD/ton, while Arabica reached 9,680 USD/ton.
Is the golden age of coffee prices over?
Coffee market expert Nguyen Quang Binh said recent signals show that the hot cycle of coffee prices may have ended.
The main reason comes from the latest forecasts showing that Brazil has a good harvest, especially the supply of Robusta is increasing strongly, and may even surpass Vietnam in terms of output in the near future. Not to mention, Brazil's coffee production costs are also lower, creating a great competitive advantage.
Mr. Binh warned: "If we do not change the production model, Vietnamese coffee farmers will face difficulties. It is time to join forces to expand scale, reduce costs, and increase our voice in the international market."

In the context of a volatile market, the program "Honoring Vietnamese coffee and tea for the 3rd time" organized by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper will take place at Gigamall Trade Center (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) on May 17 and 18 with many attractive activities: bartending demonstration, experiencing regional products, connecting businesses, thematic discussions...
The event is an opportunity for producers, farmers and consumers to look back on the development journey of the Vietnamese coffee and tea industry, and at the same time open up a more sustainable direction in the future.
