Le Thuy: Strengthening management of forestry seed quality
(QBĐT) - With the goal of developing forestry in a sustainable direction, increasing the area of large timber plantations and FSC-certified timber, in recent years, Le Thuy district has focused on implementing many solutions to manage the quality of forestry seedlings in the area, contributing to improving productivity, quality and economic efficiency of the forestry sector...

As a locality with potential and strength in afforestation, however, in Le Thuy district, there are currently only 5 forestry seed production facilities (of which 1 facility is temporarily suspending production due to land clearance and construction of the North-South expressway passing through the area). On average, each year, forestry seed production facilities in the district only allocate about 1.8 million seedlings (mainly hybrid acacia cuttings).
Therefore, in addition to seed sources at local production and supply facilities, there are also seed sources imported from other provinces through forestry seed businesses.

Ms. Le Thi Luyen, owner of a forestry seedling production facility in Truong Thuy commune, said: “Currently, the forestry seedling supply market is highly competitive; most forest growers are very concerned about the origin, quality, and price of forestry seedlings. In order for seedlings to reach people with a high survival rate, good growth, and reasonable prices, our facility always imports the original embryos from reputable addresses, with clear origins, and recognized by competent authorities. During the care process, if the original seedlings used for seedling production show signs of stunting or disease, they will be immediately eliminated to avoid affecting the quality, production efficiency, and supply of forestry seedlings to the market.”
In order to carry out the function of enforcing forestry laws, in recent times, the Le Thuy District Forest Protection Department has strengthened coordination with the District Department of Agriculture and Environment, and the People's Committees of communes to inspect forestry seedling businesses; and seed sources imported from other provinces. Through the inspection, basically, seed production facilities as well as forestry seedling business households in the locality, and vehicles transporting seedlings into the area have provided complete documents and origins of plant varieties according to the provisions of law. Thanks to that, Le Thuy District has strictly controlled floating seed sources of unknown origin that affect the quality and productivity of plant varieties in the area.
The total forest area of Le Thuy district is currently 90,261.48 hectares, of which: Natural forest 60,777.49 hectares, planted forest 29,483.99 hectares... Forest cover rate in the district reaches 64.39%.
Currently, many forest owners and forest planting households in Le Thuy have gradually organized forestry production according to the value chain, replicating effective production models in forestry. Initially, a link has been formed between forest growers and processing and consumption facilities of forestry products associated with sustainable forest management. In addition, many forest owners and forest planting households in Le Thuy have boldly gradually shifted the method of forest planting from extensive to intensive planting; promoted the construction of a model of intensive large-timber forest planting to improve economic efficiency and protect the environment.
Head of Le Thuy District Forest Protection Department Pham Van But said: In recent years, the District Forest Protection Department has regularly coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Environment to direct, guide and inspect forestry seed production and trading units in the area to strictly implement the contents of seed recognition and seed sources; promote the management of forestry seed materials according to regulations... In addition, the department regularly closely monitors projects to change the purpose of forest use to other purposes, in order to prevent, stop and handle acts of taking advantage of forest exploitation, deforestation, encroachment and illegal occupation of forest land; promptly detect violations, organize prevention and handling according to regulations, improve the effectiveness of forest protection and management, and forest product management.
