In an urgent situation when flood water on Cau River, the section flowing through Dau Han area, Hoa Long ward, Bac Ninh city, Bac Ninh province rose high, showing signs of overflowing the canal reinforced with sandbags and tarpaulins nearly 1 meter high, some people shared on social networks asking for urgent support.

"Each person only needs to support us for 2 hours of sand shoveling to build the dike" - people in Dau Han area wish and said that for 2 days and 3 nights, the army and people did not sleep to concentrate on reinforcing the dike about 3km long.

Surprisingly, thousands of people from all over the place came "like a festival", standing along the long dike. Everyone wanted to contribute their part to prevent flood water from flowing over the dike into the village, affecting crops and houses of the people.

Although she is nearly 70 years old, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngát in Hamlet 3, Dau Han area, together with the soldiers and villagers, still tries her best to put sand in sacks and reinforce the embankment on the dyke to block the rising flood water and keep the village safe.

"If floodwaters enter residential areas, they will affect the lives of all people, causing many diseases and illnesses, so people do not sleep day and night, working hard to reinforce the dikes," said Ms. Ngát, expressing her gratitude to the donors who provided food and water during the 2 days and 3 nights when soldiers and people struggled with the rising floodwaters on the Cau River.

Dau Han Quarter has 350 households with 1,600 people located outside the Cau River dike. The quarter is protected by a nearly 3km long dike that was concreted and solidly embanked outside the river in 2010. The lowest elevation is 7.1m (80cm higher than alarm level 3), the highest elevation is 8m (1.7m higher than alarm level 3).

When information was received that people were needed to help shovel sand into bags to reinforce the dike, thousands of people "like a festival crowd" flocked to the dike in Dau Han area to actively support villagers in preventing flood water on Cau River.

At 6:00 p.m. on September 10, the water level of the Cau River here exceeded alert level 3, with the risk of overflowing the dike. To respond, Bac Ninh province mobilized the Bac Ninh City Military Command, Brigade 164 (Army Corps 12) and 50 officers and soldiers of the Mobile Police Department (Bac Ninh Provincial Police) along with nearly 1,000 local people to reinforce the Dau Han dike; conduct propaganda and mobilize people to move and protect their lives and property.

Following the instructions of the technical staff of the Bac Ninh City Dike Management Department, the locality focused on mobilizing forces to use sandbags to reinforce the surface, creating a channel along the edge of the dike, improving the ability to resist flooding. By nearly 2:00 a.m. on September 11, the dike system in Dau Han neighborhood was reinforced to an average height of 60cm, meeting the flood prevention requirements set by the professional agency.

On September 12, the people of Dau Han area continued to work hard to reinforce the dike to prevent the flood water from rising higher and higher on the Cau River. The peak was on the evening of September 12, when the flood water on the Cau River overflowed the dike, even though it had been raised by the people, in some places it was more than 1 meter high.

In a "life-threatening" situation, through people's sharing on social networks, thousands of people from all over the country suddenly flocked to support the people of Dau Han area by scooping sand into sacks to prevent water from overflowing the dike.

"Thousands of people came to help. They told the people of Dau Han area to take a break because they had been working hard to reinforce the dike for days and nights, but we never stopped," Ms. Ngát shared, adding that if the rice fields were completely flooded, they could be restored quickly, but if the floodwaters flooded into residential areas, the damage would be very severe. Therefore, the whole population was determined to fight the flood until the last minute.

The efforts of the army and people have stopped the flood water from reaching a peak of 7.79m, just 0.05cm below the historical flood peak of 1971 (7.84m), the year of the dike breach disaster in the North. On September 13, the people of Dau Han area were temporarily at ease and had a good night's sleep after days and nights of hard work reinforcing the dike to keep the residential area safe.
