Artist Cam Thu said that on the night of April 17, in Houston, Texas - USA, artist Minh Canh was organized by young colleagues in the US for a live show with the theme "86 years of life and the stage".
In his old age, his legs are weak and he struggles to step onto the stage, but his voice is still sweet and full of emotion.
Artist Cam Thu shared: "Famous singer Minh Canh confided a lot about his stage career. From a person living in poverty, he caught the eye of producer Kim Chung, and then suddenly became a famous singer. Now 86 years old, with the life he has lived and devoted to art, he has no regrets, only dreaming of having enough health to return to Vietnam to meet the audience who loved him."
Famous singer Minh Canh also confided that if he has the chance and is healthy enough, he will make a trip back to his hometown to sing on stage, serving audiences who love the art of reformed opera.
Artist Minh Canh at the age of 80
Artist Minh Canh was born in 1937, real name Nguyen Van Canh. He was born into a poor family with many children in Cho Lon, experienced a difficult childhood, had to struggle early to make a living, such as collecting scrap metal, selling orange cakes, fried bananas... However, from a young age, Minh Canh showed his passion for music . When going to roadside shops with music, the male artist would stop to listen, mumble and sing along. It was not until he returned to live with his father that Minh Canh followed a music teacher to learn to sing.
At the age of 22, while selling banh u at the memorial service of the founder of the Cai Luong theater, he was introduced by artist Van Duoc to try his hand at singing the 6 verses of the vọng cổ song "The Soldier's Letter". Minh Canh sang sweetly and was praised by everyone. After that, Minh Canh was introduced to the Kim Chung troupe manager and began his singing career.
At first, Minh Canh earned 40 dong each night singing and signed a 2-year contract, with a salary of 20,000 dong. At that time, the plays Minh Canh participated in such as: "The Blind Artist of Ha Tien Land", "Phu Kieu Truong Han", "The Laughter of Bao Tu", "The Snow Covers the Winter Afternoon", "The Sad Autumn Afternoon of Parting"... all had a large audience.

Through the tutoring of teachers Hai Si, Van Duoc and Bay Trach, Minh Canh appeared on the stage sparkling with a smooth, melodious voice and a sky-high salary.
In 1961, Minh Canh became famous from the vọng cổ song "Tu là đầu Phúc", followed by a series of ancient songs with lyrics written by composer Vien Chau such as: "Vo Dong So", "Mua tren pho Hue ", "Luong Son Ba", "Sau vuong ý nhac", "Luu Binh - Duong Le", "Long da da da ba", "Em bé đánh con giày", "Chuyen xe lam chieu", "Doi mua gio", "Ni co va Kiem si", "Trai du rieng"...
Two years later, he founded a theater troupe and performed leading roles, shining brightly in the following cai luong plays: "Ben cau vong the", "Manh ao que ngheo", "Bich Van cung ky an", "Trinh nu lau xanh", "Loi tho tren huyet"...
In particular, in "The Brocade Shop at the Village Head" (the story of Luu Binh - Duong Le), Minh Canh broke through with a long, 53-word vọng cổ verse, setting the first mark for long-winded vọng cổ verses to this day. Now, on the cải lương stage, there are "descendants" of artist Minh Canh such as: People's Artist Giang Chau, Artist Chau Thanh, Meritorious Artist Phuong Hang, Artist Binh Trang, Ngan Hue, Linh Hue, Meritorious Artist Cam Tien, ... who sing long-winded verses very skillfully.

After 1975, the audience loved artist Minh Canh even more with a number of impressive new and old songs such as: "Canh chim tren bien", "Re ra dau mua", "Bong diep Sai Gon", "Dam nuoc tren duong que huong", "Bong trang bong sen", "Ca ca tree sau vuon", "Nguoi me thoi thoi troi", "Quan nhu dem", "Doan cuong tinh yeu", "Chuyen xe lam chieu chien", "Co loi do", "Thuyen thuyen hoa", "Ruoc ruoi huong", "Canh stork va dong song", "Love of the country", "Chin dong song hoi hen"...
He immigrated to the US in 1995 and underwent many medical treatments. He returned to Vietnam to participate in the program "Artists and Stage" organized by HTV and performed at the Orphanage Center in Binh Duong .
