Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine proposes 3 solutions for students of the Vietnamese - German Medical Program

(NLDO)- Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine offers 3 solutions for students of the Vietnamese-German Medical Program, but there are still many difficulties ahead.

On the afternoon of October 22, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine (HCMC) organized a meeting with parents and students of the 2023-2024 course of the Vietnamese-German Medical Program. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Thoai, Vice Principal in charge of school operations, chaired the meeting.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Thoai summarized the situation and developments leading to the suspension of the Vietnam - Germany Medical Program. This is a Vietnam - Germany dual degree training cooperation program, training for 5 years in Vietnam and 1 year in Germany. Upon completing the M3 program (final), students will receive a general practitioner degree from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and the partner school in Germany.

Since 2013, 99 doctors have graduated in Germany under this program, of which 8 doctors have returned to Vietnam.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Thoai said that Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine cooperates with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, but the IMPP Institute is the place that creates the German medical and pharmaceutical exam questions.

After Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine signed a cooperation agreement with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz for the period 2022-2027, IMPP Institute changed its policy to stop providing M2 national exam papers abroad after 2027. Therefore, the Vietnam - Germany Medical Program could not continue, so Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz announced its termination.

The class of 2025 is forced to stop enrolling students in the Vietnamese-German Medical Program and switch to the medical program. The school will refund the tuition fees paid under the Vietnamese-German Medical Program. However, for students of the 2023 and 2024 classes currently studying, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine has proposed 3 solutions:

- The school continues negotiations with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz on a new training program.

- The school, through its partners, continues to negotiate with IMPP on providing German national exams outside the country until 2030 - at the end of the 2023 and 2024 academic year.

- Organize students to take the M2 exam in Germany. However, to take the M2 exam in Germany, students must pass C1 German.

Solution 3 has 2 possibilities: When going to Germany, if students pass M2, of course the schools will accept them to continue the M3 program, the school will transfer the points to the partner school so that they can receive a German degree. If students do not pass M2 but within 12 years from the time of entering school, they can return to Vietnam to train in the general medical program according to the domestic program framework.

Parents of students of the 2023 class of the Vietnamese-German Medical Program expressed their opinions.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Thoai pledged that the school will make every effort to coordinate with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz so that students of the 2023-2024 course can complete the program.

At the meeting, parents of the class of 2023 assessed the Vietnamese-German medical program as legitimate and appreciated the school's efforts. Parents hope that the program will continue, because with this incident, students are still the ones who suffer the most.

Parents also expressed their concerns to the school leadership as well as sent letters to Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the IMPP Testing Institute.
