Information about the Italian team
The Italy national football team (Nazionale di calcio dell'Italia) represents Italy in international football, and is controlled by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and is a member of UEFA. The team's home matches are played in stadiums across Italy, while its headquarters are at the Centro Tecnico Federale di Coverciano in Florence.
The Italian national football team is one of the most successful teams in history, having won the World Cup four times (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) and the European Championship twice (1968, 2020). They have also had notable achievements such as being runners-up twice in the World Cup (1970, 1994) and the European Championship (2000, 2012), as well as high positions in other tournaments such as the FIFA Confederations Cup (third in 2013) and the UEFA Nations League (third in 2021, 2023).
The team's nickname "Gli Azzurri" (The Blues) comes from its traditional blue, the colour of the House of Savoy. Italy won its first World Cup in 1934 and was the first team to successfully defend the title in 1938. Despite a difficult period following the 1949 plane crash, the Italian team has performed consistently in the following years and holds the world record for the most consecutive unbeaten matches (37 matches from 2018 to 2021).
The Italian national team has strong competition with other top teams such as Brazil, France, Germany and Spain. In the FIFA rankings, the Italian national team has reached the top position several times, with the most recent being in November 1993 and in 2007, although it has dropped to 21st place in August 2018.
