Released in late April, Detective Kien: The Headless Case quickly created a positive word-of-mouth effect, continuously leading the box office in its third week of release. According to Box Office Vietnam, the film earned more than 32 billion VND in just three days of the weekend (9-11.5), surpassing Lat mat 8: Vong tay nang by about 12 billion VND in the same period.

As of 6 p.m. on May 12, the film has risen to 10th place in the list of highest-grossing Vietnamese films of all time, right after Lat mat 8: Vong tay nang and 3 other films also released in 2025, including Bo tu bao thu (332 billion VND), Nha gia tien (242 billion VND) and Nu hon bac bien (211 billion VND).
This is also the highest revenue milestone in director Victor Vu's career, surpassing the old record with Blue Eyes (over 180 billion VND).

Notably, last week, Detective Kien: The Headless Case unexpectedly “turned the tide” when it was allocated 7,089 screenings by theaters, higher than Lat mat 8: Vong tay nang (5,440 screenings). On May 12, Victor Vu’s film earned nearly 3 billion VND more, compared to more than 1.6 billion VND of Lat mat 8: Vong tay nang . At this rate, Detective Kien: The Headless Case is expected to soon surpass the revenue of Lat mat 8: Vong tay nang in the coming days.

Up to now, only half of 2025 has passed, but Vietnamese cinema has had at least 4 films surpassing the 200 billion VND revenue mark and will likely surpass the number of hundred billion VND films of the whole year 2024 (including 7 films: Mai, Lat mat 7: Mot uoc, Get rich with ghosts, Ma da, Cam, Chi dau and Met lai chi bau) .
