On May 21, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh worked with the Standing Committees of the three provinces of Lam Dong, Binh Thuan, and Dak Nong on matters related to the completion of the merger of the three provinces.

Phu Quy Island becomes a special marine economic zone

During the process of coordinating the project to merge the three provinces of Lam Dong, Binh Thuan and Dak Nong into the new Lam Dong province, Binh Thuan province made a clear recommendation: to organize Phu Quy special zone as a special administrative unit, with a separate management mechanism to maximize the potential of the marine economy.

According to the report of the Standing Committee of Binh Thuan Provincial Party Committee presented by Mr. Nguyen Hoai Anh - Secretary of Binh Thuan Provincial Party Committee - there is a proposal to build Phu Quy as a special economic zone.

Specifically, the Standing Committee of Binh Thuan Provincial Party Committee reported and asked for opinions from the Central Organizing Committee on determining the party organization model in the special zone and the number of Party committees, standing committees of Party committees, and deputy secretaries of Party committees of the Phu Quy special zone Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term.

The construction of Phu Quy island district into a special economic zone is not simply based on geographical isolation, but also on strategic values in terms of economy, national security and defense, and potential for sustainable development.

Phu Quy is currently the only island district of Binh Thuan, with a special position on the international shipping route and great potential for marine ecotourism, renewable energy and offshore fishing.

Binh Thuan province believes that if the merger follows a unified model and the district level is abolished, Phu Quy will become a commune-level administrative unit under the province. This will cause difficulties in administrative management and specific development.

Phu Quy island district is the only district-level administrative unit located offshore of Binh Thuan province, about 56 nautical miles (equivalent to more than 100km) southeast of Phan Thiet city. With an area of about 17km², this island district includes three communes: Ngu Phung, Tam Thanh and Long Hai, with a population of about 30,000 people.

Ta Dung becomes an eco-tourism highlight

The report of the Standing Committee of Dak Nong Provincial Party Committee presented to Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh stated: in the spatial development planning of the new Lam Dong province after the merger, Ta Dung area (Dak Nong) is identified as one of the key areas for eco-tourism development and nature conservation.

Although there is no separate administrative proposal, Dak Nong has included Ta Dung in the post-merger strategic orientations as a "new urban-tourist area".

With a water surface of more than 3,600 hectares and more than 40 large and small islands in the middle of the lake, Ta Dung is considered as "Ha Long Bay in the Central Highlands". This area is currently located in the Ta Dung National Park nature reserve, a part of the precious geological and geomorphological heritage of the region.

According to planning experts, if properly invested, Ta Dung can become a highlight attracting domestic and international tourists, contributing to shaping the eco-tourism brand of the new province.

In addition to its landscape value, Ta Dung also plays an important role in preserving biodiversity and sustainable development of the Central Highlands after the merger.

The development orientation of this area has now been integrated into the overall spatial plans of the new Lam Dong province, submitted to the Government and the National Assembly for consideration in 2025.
