The 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City will take place on June 6 and 7, with 76,435 candidates registering to take the exam. Candidates will take three subjects: literature, math and foreign language. The time limit for literature and math is 120 minutes each; the time limit for foreign language is 90 minutes. Candidates taking the specialized/integrated exam will take an additional specialized/integrated exam, with a time limit of 150 minutes.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has planned 142 testing sites, including 132 regular 10th grade testing sites and 10 specialized 10th grade testing sites. At the same time, the Department of Education and Training has also mobilized 13,272 teachers to serve as invigilators. In addition, there are 2,070 staff, security guards, police officers, etc. on duty at the testing sites.

In the reading comprehension section, students need to clearly understand the genre characteristics of each type of text (literary, argumentative, informational). Students need to actively read through to visualize the general content, underline keywords, identify key features and think about the role of each detail in the content and form of the text. Reading comprehension is not memorization, but the process of thinking, analyzing and expressing thoughts using one's accumulated knowledge.

With the requirement to write an argumentative paragraph or a paragraph of appreciation of a literary text, students need to pay attention to clearly defining the operation (argumentative or expressive - appreciation) and the object according to the requirements of the topic (content/theme or artistic aspects) to establish a way to develop an outline appropriately. In addition, it is necessary to have a firm grasp of the genre characteristics of the text given in the topic. This not only helps to understand the work correctly, but is also the key to in-depth analysis, correct writing and convincing demonstration of literary thinking ability.

When writing, students should note that an effective paragraph must have 3 parts: an introduction that clearly states the problem; a body paragraph that develops the argument, provides typical evidence, and explains the meaning of the message; a conclusion that comments and creates depth of thought. When writing, avoid listing or paraphrasing the text; instead, choose 1-2 prominent details to analyze in depth.

As for social argumentative essays, students need to follow a clear argumentative sequence, avoiding writing emotionally. Each paragraph needs to have a specific thesis, reflecting the focus of the topic. When implementing, it is necessary to combine many argumentative operations such as explaining concepts, analyzing roles and expressions, providing authentic evidence, commenting and evaluating, and if appropriate, counter-arguments to create depth of thinking. The argument must be tight, the evidence must be representative, presented in a logical sequence: from thesis to analysis, evidence and conclusion.

In particular, Mr. Huy believes that it is necessary to write with one's own thoughts and arguments, avoiding clichés or stereotypes.

The questions in the exam are almost all set in real life contexts, not just single questions like before. Therefore, students cannot learn by rote, but must understand and apply words to real life to do the test.

The questions about traffic signs in the exam are not just about traffic signs but will be diverse in life, related to each specific situation, requiring students to use vocabulary and understanding in real life, and to know how to observe life around them.

The dialogues will not be as short as before, but can be announcements, advertisements, leaflets, regulations, rules, etc., demonstrating the high applicability of language in real life. Therefore, in the process of doing the test, you must pay attention to the application of vocabulary in reality.

Another difference is that the test will remove the word arrangement and sentence arrangement sections, and instead include questions about dictionary use, requiring students to know how to apply and use the dictionary, the semantics of words, and apply them to real-life situations.

According to Ms. Xuan Oanh, this year's exam will require more diverse application of language to real-life situations, not just paragraphs, because the 2018 General Education Program requires students to have creative thinking. Therefore, to do this year's exam, students must know how to apply vocabulary and grammar to real-life situations.

5 things to remember when doing a literature test

In a few days, students in Ho Chi Minh City will take the 10th grade entrance exam, starting with the literature test. Mr. Thai Hong Khang, a literature teacher at Hoang Dieu Secondary School, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City, summarizes 5 things students need to remember.

First , you must allocate your time reasonably. Reading comprehension takes 30 minutes (for both parts); writing a paragraph takes 25 minutes and writing an essay takes 60 minutes.

Second , you need to spend 5 minutes reading and processing the test requirements. You should read each question carefully and underline the key requirements.

Third , when doing reading comprehension, you need to answer the question accurately, following the principle of asking - answering; writing with the correct structure, coherently, avoiding long-winded, rambling writing. With the types of questions identifying and stating the effect, commenting, students need to answer 2 parts: Name, language elements used; clearly state the effect: in terms of topic and emotion. With the questions relating, applying, you need to stick to the requirements of the question, focus on the explanatory ideas to clarify; combine with personal connections.

Fourth , when writing a literary argumentative essay, it is necessary to have 3 complete parts: opening paragraph (introducing the problem); body paragraph (analysis, feelings, evidence); conclusion paragraph (evaluation, connection).

Fifth , when writing a social argumentative essay, the structure must have 3 complete parts. The introduction introduces the argumentative issue; the body analyzes and explains the issue, collects appropriate evidence; the conclusion reaffirms the issue, draws lessons, and relates to oneself. Each part, students write in separate paragraphs, present clearly, do not write the whole essay in one go. In particular, there must be a "relating to oneself" step at the end of the essay, this is an important requirement to express thoughts and personal responsibility for the issue raised.
