How to make Lam Dong province attractive to international tourists.

Lam Dong possesses many advantages to attract high-quality international tourists. Its diverse and unique cultural, ecological, and resort spaces create a favorable foundation for developing in-depth tourism products that focus on experiences, identity, and sustainable values.

Each tour guide is a "cultural ambassador".

Quality of experience is our core value.

Lam Dong is one of the leading centers for high-tech agriculture in the country, with strengths in vegetables, flowers, tea, coffee, and temperate fruits. This is an ideal condition for developing farm-to-table and fine dining products linked to the local story – a segment particularly suitable for high-spending international tourists who value cultural experiences and local lifestyles. However, despite an increase compared to the previous year, the proportion of international tourists to Lam Dong in 2025 is still modest, estimated at about 6.2% of the total number of tourists (nearly 1.3 million), with the group of long-stay, high-spending international tourists remaining limited.

Therefore, to effectively exploit existing advantages and gradually elevate local tourism, Lam Dong province has implemented many comprehensive and long-term solutions. A prime example is the Provincial People's Committee's Plan No. 5444 on implementing the Cultural Diplomacy Strategy until 2030. According to Mr. Tran Thanh Hoai, Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the province has identified the close integration of cultural diplomacy with political and economic diplomacy, considering culture and tourism as strategic promotion channels.

Accordingly, the province proactively coordinates with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , embassies, and consulates to organize programs introducing culture, cuisine, and tourism both domestically and internationally; invites diplomatic delegations, businesses, and international press to conduct on-site surveys; and integrates the promotion of Lam Dong at international events and festivals. The focus is on the European, Northeast Asian, and North American markets – where high-spending tourists tend to stay for longer periods. "Selective promotion, emphasizing cultural depth, identity, and quality experiences, targeting the international market with high-quality tourists is the province's overarching direction," Mr. Tran Thanh Hoai emphasized.

In reality, unlike mass tourism, high-quality international tourists are less influenced by mass media or prices, and instead place their trust in real-life experiences, the reputation of the destination, and recommendations from those who have already visited. Peter Shenfield (78 years old, a Canadian tourist) said that his trip to Lam Dong stemmed from a recommendation from his son, who works in Ho Chi Minh City and had previously traveled to and stayed in Da Lat, impressed by the pleasant climate, unique cultural atmosphere, slow pace of life, and the sincerity and hospitality of the local people.

From the perspective of someone working in the tourism industry, Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh (Nam Ban commune, Lam Ha district) shared that his family's establishment focuses on providing experiences such as visiting, harvesting, and processing agricultural products, coffee, and mulberry, combined with exploring nearby landmarks. "Instead of mass advertising, the establishment prioritizes the quality of the experience, targeting small groups of customers with high spending power; the main customers are families and groups of friends who recommend each other," Mr. Thanh said.

The quality of human resources is a key factor.

To maintain its appeal to high-quality tourists, Mr. Thanh and his team proactively innovate, thoroughly researching the customs, traditions, and especially the culture of ethnic minority communities, thereby meeting the increasingly sophisticated needs of tourists.

Regularly accompanying North American tour groups, Tran Manh Thang (38 years old, tour guide for Overseas Adventure Travel Company, USA) said that this group of tourists is highly independent; many tourists in their 80s and 90s are still proactive in their daily lives and have strict requirements regarding nutrition and health care. Therefore, even with more than 7 years of experience, before each trip, he still takes the time to carefully understand the preferences and health conditions of each member, thereby flexibly adjusting the program, services, and approach to provide a suitable, safe, and complete experience.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs Tran Thanh Hoai, to meet the requirements of developing high-quality tourism and international integration, Lam Dong province will focus on building a well-structured, professional team of officials, civil servants, and tourism personnel who are proficient in foreign languages, deeply knowledgeable about Vietnamese and international culture, and have practical experience in organizing events and cultural activities. In particular, the province will concentrate on improving cross-cultural communication skills and the capacity to provide high-end services. Tourism personnel should not only "know how to serve" but also understand the cultural, historical, culinary, and agricultural aspects of Lam Dong, so that each tour guide, chef, or hotel staff member becomes a "cultural ambassador".

Simultaneously, the province is strengthening cooperation with training institutions, major tourism businesses, and international organizations to standardize vocational skills; encouraging artisans and local communities to participate in teaching and sharing cultural knowledge. The goal is to build a professional workforce that is both knowledgeable about local culture to enhance the experience and possesses the diplomatic skills to attract and retain high-quality tourists.

When these solutions prove effective, Lam Dong is expected to become an unmissable destination for tourists who love in-depth experiences, and a preferred choice for travel businesses to design unique, bespoke itineraries. This is also an important foundation for repositioning the local tourism brand towards sustainability, creating long-term economic value based on the satisfaction and trust of high-quality tourists.
