One theme per year
Starting from 2019, the Literature exam for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City has been strongly renewed. The exam has only 3 questions corresponding to 3 parts: Reading comprehension (30%), Social commentary (30%), Literary commentary 40% (including 2 questions with 1 choice). The exam is assessed as "far but close": Far from stereotypes, rote learning, close to life, to student psychology.
Many teachers commented that “when they pick up the topic, they want to write right away” when the structure is reasonable, closely follows the program content, and creates conditions for students to develop their creativity. In particular, giving students the right to choose their own direction for writing or literary essay questions is considered to help them develop their skills, express their opinions and emotions, and at the same time avoid learning literature in a formulaic way, learning by rote, and learning model literature.
The breakthrough started in 2020, since then, every year, Ho Chi Minh City has chosen a topic for the 10th grade Literature exam. For the first time, the exam was systematically based on the Listening topic (Listening to change, listening to love, listening to understand). The exam was scientific , logical and closely followed current events, ensuring questions about knowledge of the work, testing reading comprehension skills, argumentation skills, and creating openness for students to be creative. Even question 1 of the literary argument had 3 options, not causing difficulty with the rote learning style, learning from sample essays.
In 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ho Chi Minh City will not organize the 10th grade exam. In 2022, the 10th grade Literature exam will have the theme: The message of time, guiding candidates to deep thoughts. The exam structure is a mix of the 2019 and 2020 exams (according to the topic axis and reading comprehension of 2 texts), with the ability to differentiate students well.

Letting thoughts come to life is the theme of 2023. The exam is considered a new direction. Differentiation is guaranteed to be consistent with the reality of public 10th grade admissions. At first glance, the exam seems long but is not difficult, the content is close, easy to understand, and practical. The topic is suitable for the cognitive and emotional abilities of 15-year-old students. The questions are creative, not duplicated from previous years. Many teachers think that this is a good exam, with a lot of creativity, creating conditions for students to demonstrate their abilities and writing skills.
In 2024, the Literature exam with the theme Heartbeat is not only for me, it is assessed to be close to the candidates, not puzzling but still has a certain differentiation. “The structure according to the topic axis is kept stable, the format of the questions is familiar, the reading comprehension materials and works in the literary argument section are close. These are truly valuable issues and works, suitable for the cognitive and psychological characteristics of the age group. That is the humane respect and support for students,” said a teacher.
Out-of-town teacher: The 10th grade Literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City is impressive and interesting
Master Ho Tan Nguyen Minh, a teacher at Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted ( Phu Yen ), has been following the 10th grade Literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City for the past 5 years and said he was very impressed and interested.
"I think that Ho Chi Minh City is one of the places that invests seriously, has strong innovation and creativity in the way of creating Literature exam questions, creating a strong attraction for teachers and students nationwide," said Mr. Minh.
Mr. Minh pointed out the advantages such as: Firstly, the integration in the exam is clearly shown when the reading comprehension, social argumentation and literary argumentation are all directed towards the same topic. For example, the topic in 2022 is "The message of time", in 2024 is "The heartbeat is not just for me". This integration creates conditions for students to think systematically, with the necessary connections between parts and sentences when doing the test.
Second, the test materials are good and profound, ensuring harmony between the texts in the program (the test from 2024 and earlier still uses texts in textbooks) and new texts that have practical meaning and reflect the breath of daily life. This shows careful consideration and serious investment by the test makers.
Third, the way of asking questions in the exam is creative and highly open. Both social and literary argumentative questions do not force students into pre-existing opinions and ideas, but only give suggestions for them to freely express their own views and thoughts, thereby promoting independent thinking and freely expressing their thinking and writing skills.
However, according to Mr. Minh, the 10th grade entrance exam in Literature in Ho Chi Minh City is relatively difficult compared to the general level of 9th grade students. "Perhaps the person who created the exam took into account the competitiveness in the purpose of the entrance exam. With such exam questions, the marking process also needs to be open and flexible, avoiding being forced and mechanical," Mr. Minh said.
