More than 1.15 million candidates have completed the Literature subject of the 2025 high school graduation exam . The Literature exam has 2 parts: Reading Comprehension (4 points) and Writing (6 points). The content revolves around the passage: Different skies by author Nguyen Minh Chau.
Commenting on the 2025 High School Graduation Literature exam, Master Nguyen Phuoc Bao Khoi, Lecturer of Literature at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that the 2025 High School Graduation Exam is imbued with the breath of life, closely linked to the current situation of the country, both awakening the sense of respect for the past and evoking the sense of responsibility for the changes of the nation. Moreover, the exam has ensured the orientation of developing the qualities and abilities of the 2018 Literature program very well, achieving a high level of differentiation.

In particular, the Reading Comprehension section has a text excerpt of a short story by Nguyen Minh Chau, a prominent writer with a philosophical narrative style. Therefore, the topic and content value of the text are very good materials for students to exploit in the following questions, especially the social discussion section. The reading comprehension question system closely follows the requirements for short story reading skills of the 2018 Literature Program when mentioning factors such as narrative voice, typical details, thematic content and some artistic features that clarify thematic content. The 5th question is not only good but also meets the requirement of comparing literary texts, which is a popular type of essay in grade 12.
The section on writing a literary argumentative paragraph requires analyzing the feelings of the character Le for the character Son, which is essentially a requirement associated with a specific expression of the character's emotional world , helping readers understand the character better, and meeting the requirements for developing the paragraph (focusing on only one issue), and having available evidence suggested from the reading comprehension questions above.
"That is the subtle 'escape route' that the test maker provides for students," said Mr. Khoi.
Regarding the social essay writing section, Mr. Khoi said that the exam has evoked a deep and meaningful awareness that there is no distinction between homeland and Fatherland, no separation between homeland and the territorial integrity of the Fatherland, no distinction between love for homeland and patriotism. The differentiation of the exam also focuses on this content when it is not easy to identify the central and extended arguments. However, if we stick to the content of the material and make good use of the answer to reading comprehension question number 5, we are sure that students will easily "pass the test".
Dr. Trinh Thu Tuyet (teacher at Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School, Hanoi), said that the exam closely followed the structure of the reference exam previously announced by the Ministry of Education and Training. The content of the Reading and Writing questions in the exam are all within the scope of knowledge and skills according to the "Requirements to achieve" of the Literature subject - GeneralEducation Program 2018.
In particular, the Reading Comprehension section (4 points) includes 5 questions classified according to cognitive levels. Questions 1 and 2 are both at the cognitive level, in which question 1 requires recognition of the narrator in the text, a knowledge of the narrative genre that is very familiar to students; question 2 requires recognition of the two rivers of Le and Son's hometown, a detail that is present in the content of the text. These are two questions that help candidates with average academic ability to achieve maximum score.
Classification ability mainly appears in questions 3, 4, 5 at the comprehension and application levels when requiring candidates to have depth of thinking and experience.
Question number 3 is a comprehension level question, requiring students to analyze the effect of the comparative rhetorical device in a sentence of the excerpt - this question simultaneously tests the candidates' perception skills, analytical skills and Vietnamese knowledge.
Question 4 is also a comprehension question, requiring candidates to analyze the role of a detail in expressing the content of the text. This is a question with a relatively good classification ability when candidates have to understand and feel not only the difficult circumstances of life fighting to protect the Fatherland but also feel the camaraderie, the solidarity of the soldiers - see the meaning of the detail in expressing the theme of the text.
Question number 5 is at the application level, requiring students to apply their literary knowledge, knowledge of life, society... to not only choose the direction of the answer, the way of thinking and logical and accurate arguments, but also demonstrate independent thinking and self-control when analyzing the similarity in meaning in 2 details of 2 texts, seeing the sacred attachment of each person to the lands and skies of the homeland.
For the Writing section, question 1 of literary argumentation, candidates not only perceive the content of the excerpt but also practice the skill of analyzing an important aspect of the narrative genre. These are familiar issues in the program's requirements, hopefully they will not be difficult for candidates.
Sentence 2, social argumentation is a traditional and sacred issue, but it is very up-to-date with the context of national construction and development, especially in the "era of rising up". The issue is therefore both close and practical, and touches the sacred love of the homeland in the soul of every Vietnamese person, especially it can create excitement for students who are preparing to enter a new threshold of life, where they not only cultivate and promote their personal capacity and courage, but also have to always remind themselves to keep their hearts warm with their homeland. The ideas of the essay will also be very suitable for the trend of innovation and integration of the times.
However, according to Ms. Tuyet, generations of teachers, students as well as society in general are still waiting for stronger steps in the journey of innovation, waiting for Beautiful Literature exams, approaching students' abilities, contributing to forming the necessary abilities and qualities of future generations of Vietnamese people.
