Listen to the story of preserving the quintessence of Vietnamese martial arts
As one of the 6 typical martial arts schools of Binh Dinh province as well as one of the dedicated folk artists, teaching traditional martial arts, Grand Master Le Van Canh (79 years old) and the martial arts school he founded, Le Xuan Canh in Nhon Hung ward, An Nhon town, are always at the forefront of developing the training movement for the young generation as well as preserving and conserving the quintessence of traditional national martial arts to reach far and wide.
In the evenings at Le Xuan Canh martial arts school, there is always a bustle and loud shouts of students practicing with the forms and whip moves, which are typical of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts. Talking about teaching martial arts for free, without charging, old martial arts master Le Van Canh confided: “I not only teach martial arts, but also teach martial arts to serve local festival movements. Learning traditional martial arts is lifelong learning, not learning in a short time, but over many years. If you study for a long time and collect tuition, where will the students get the money to study? The martial arts school teaches all year round and always has students, whenever there is a festival movement, there will be enough students to participate. From there, the quintessence of Vietnamese martial arts is preserved.”
As for the 86-year-old international martial arts master Truong Van Vinh, who comes from one of the famous martial arts families in Binh Dinh. In more than 60 years of practicing and passing on the traditional martial arts heritage, he has brought Vietnamese martial arts to many countries around the world, contributing to enriching the identity and preserving the intangible cultural heritage of Vietnamese traditional martial arts. In particular, Phi Long Vinh martial arts school is known as one of the few "Four Generations Under One Roof" families of a martial arts school, a place that has inspired and contributed to the strong development and spread of the traditional martial arts training movement among young people.
Coming to Ky Son, talking to us, international martial arts master Phi Long Vinh - the 9th generation grandson of Truong Van Hien (teacher Hien, master of the three Tay Son brothers including Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Hue, Nguyen Lu), shared about the process of learning traditional martial arts: "I learned martial arts since I was 8 years old, and was taught by my biological father the martial arts secrets of the famous Truong family, including the "Ngoc Tran Than Cong" form. After that, I learned more martial arts from uncle Truong Hoang and Truong Xuan Ba". In his youth, international martial arts master Phi Long Vinh competed in Boxing in many countries such as Thailand, Korea, China... and was passionate about teaching traditional martial arts, so at the age of 25, he established the Phi Long Vinh martial arts school in Ky Son village, Phuoc Son commune, Tuy Phuoc district.

Vitality in ancient martial arts villages
Returning to Hoa My village (separated from Thuan Truyen commune), Binh Thuan commune, Tay Son district, we visited Ho Sung martial arts school founded by grand master Ho Van Sung to deeply understand the story of vitality in the ancient martial arts village.
Talking about Thuan Truyen martial arts village, we cannot help but mention the legend of Ho Nhu. Mr. Ho Nhu is associated with the unique anecdotes of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts. Up to now, after 5 generations, the Ho family martial arts school has continued to preserve and promote Binh Dinh traditional martial arts. This is a home martial arts school located in a deep alley in Hoa My village. This house and martial arts school is also the place where the late martial arts master Ho Nhu lived and practiced martial arts. Ho family martial arts school or Thuan Truyen martial arts village is often mentioned for its whip, many introductions and martial arts moves for each weapon are included in books, all martial arts theories of the whip are known to those who follow the martial arts profession. The whip exercises: That bo, Thai Son, Bat quai, Tu mon, Ngu mon, Truc chi, Tan nhat, Tien ong... and even Lac con - the whip exercise that martial arts master Ho Sung's grandfather learned from master Ho Khiem, which is considered a treasure of the family, is now also a common asset of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts.
Over the years, not only in Tay Son district, but also in many other localities, hearing the reputation of Ho Sung martial arts school, many students, even from far away, have traveled to come and pay their respects to the master. As a martial arts practitioner, great martial arts master Ho Sung expressed: "I do not want my students and children to be too heavy on martial arts, so I focus on learning culture, etiquette, and behavior of students". When accepting students, the old martial arts master always pays attention to their appearance and mind, if someone is aggressive, he will work with their family to correct them. Old martial arts master Ho Sung also shared that he always advises his students to maintain the spirit of martial arts, first to protect themselves, to train their health, then to do useful things for people and life, not to rely on their little tricks and punches to act recklessly.
Long Phuoc Pagoda (Phuoc Thuan Commune, Tuy Phuoc District) is not only known as an ancient pagoda but also considered a place with a long tradition of preserving and promoting the unique and esoteric martial arts of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts in particular and Vietnam in general. The organization of teaching traditional martial arts at Long Phuoc Pagoda began 30 years ago, initiated by the great international martial arts master Venerable Thich Hanh Hoa (abbot of Long Phuoc Pagoda) and his disciple Thich Van Thanh (later returned to secular life as martial arts master Nguyen Dong Hai). With its own unique identity, completely different from other martial arts schools, Long Phuoc Pagoda Martial Arts Club focuses on teaching disciples Buddhist ethics in addition to teaching martial arts. The students who come to learn martial arts at the pagoda are all people with good hearts, learning martial arts is to cultivate the mind, train health, absolutely do not consider it a weapon to fight and beat people, absolutely do not compete. Learning martial arts is to promote the spirit of martial arts and national pride.
And that is also the beauty for Vietnamese Traditional Martial Arts to shine brightly and reach out to the world in the future.
