Traveling more than 100 km to take the graduation exam at the age of 40 to continue the unfinished dream

Even though they are over 40 years old, many candidates still pack their bags and take the high school graduation exam, carrying with them hope, responsibility and messages for the next generation.

On the day of completing procedures to take the high school graduation exam, Mr. Dinh Van Din, an official of Ngok Tem commune (Kon Plong district, Kon Tum ) left home at dusk. The Ca Dong man rode his motorbike more than 120 kilometers to Kon Tum city to take the 2025 high school graduation exam.

Unlike many young people entering the exam room for the first time, Mr. Din had already taken the high school graduation exam 7 years ago. Having studied at the Kon Ray District VocationalEducation - Continuing Education Center, in 2017 he registered for the graduation exam but did not achieve the desired results. This time, thanks to the encouragement of his wife, who is also a commune official, Mr. Din was determined to return to the exam room.

To make it easier to travel during the exam days, he rented a room near the exam site at Le Loi High School, taking advantage of the evening to review and systematize his knowledge.

"My wife has enough qualifications, she is the one who pushed me to retake the exam to complete my application. We have two children in grade 10 and grade 4, I want them to see that even though I am old, I still try to study, and the children should not give up halfway," Mr. Din confided.

Not only Mr. Din, this year's exam also has many special candidates, people over 40 but still trying to fulfill their unfinished dreams.

On the morning of June 25, when a thin layer of fog was still lingering on the mountains of Ngoc Yeu Commune (Tu Mo Rong District), two kindergarten teachers, Y Man (41 years old) and Y Tan (39 years old), quietly left the village. After traveling more than 100 kilometers of mountain passes by motorbike, the female teachers finally arrived at the exam site.

Participating in this exam not as a supervisor or a parent, Ms. Man and Ms. Tan are official candidates for the 2025 high school graduation exam. Because their homes are far away, both of them rented a room near the exam site early for convenience. For them, a graduation certificate is not simply an administrative requirement but also an affirmation: it is never too late to learn, especially for teachers.

Ms. Y Man, a kindergarten teacher in Te Xang commune, said she had to drop out of school early due to difficult circumstances. Many years later, when she became a mother and a teacher, she decided to return to study at the Kon Tum Province Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center.

She works during the day and studies at night. She asks her daughter, who is studying at a teacher training college, to explain the difficult parts.

"I registered for the exam before, but due to family matters, I had to postpone it. This year, I am determined to finish the exam. If I can do it, my children and grandchildren will not hesitate to try too," she shared.

Teacher Y Tan failed her graduation exam in 2007. This time, the encouragement of her husband (a cadre of Tu Mo Rong district) and two school-age children was a great source of encouragement for her.

"The older child is in 10th grade, the younger child is in 7th grade, both of them tell me to try my best. I don't take the exam to compete for degrees, but to show my children that I still study and take the exam, so they also have to try their best to complete their education," said Ms. Tan. This year, Ms. Tan registered to take the exam in the following subjects: Literature, Math, History and Geography. Although she doesn't know the results yet, Ms. Tan is relieved that she tried her best.

These teachers and officials take the exam when they are past their youth, not looking for a new start, but to complete unfinished things. Each step to the exam hall is a message to their children and students that the learning journey never has a limit.
