At around 0:00 on October 28, a loud explosion was heard on a mountain in Lang Moi village, about 4 km northeast of Ngoc Linh commune headquarters. Then heavy rain brought a red mud flow of more than 3 km down the stream, burying many areas of crops and cutting off the inter-village road from Lang Moi to Ngoc Nang.
Mr. Dinh Xuan Hoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngoc Linh commune, said the landslide isolated more than 430 households with more than 1,700 people in the villages of Ngoc Nang, Ngoc Lang, Mo Po, Xa Ua, and Tu Rang.
"This morning it was still raining heavily. The commune, along with the army, police and people, fixed the problem and evacuated households in high-risk areas to a safe place," said Mr. Hoa.
Previously, Ngoc Linh commune had many landslides due to heavy rain. Provincial Road 673 alone, from Xop commune to Ngoc Linh, had about 10 landslides with rocks and soil spilling onto the road surface. Nong Vac suspension bridge to Dak Nai village, Ngoc Linh commune, had damaged piers.
Heavy rain in the Central region started on the night of October 23, but continued from the night of October 25 until today, causing floodwaters in Hue to reach a historic peak, and many areas in Da Nang to be deeply submerged.
In Quang Ngai, serious landslides occurred at more than 30 locations in mountainous communes and western communes (formerly Kon Tum province). On National Highway 14 connecting Quang Ngai with Da Nang, Lo Xo Pass has many landslides with thousands of cubic meters of rock and soil, paralyzing traffic since October 26.
