Admission scores for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City's top schools have not decreased compared to last year?

Looking at the announced exam scores, Ms. Nguyen Doan Trang, principal of Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1), said that the entrance scores of top schools in the inner city did not decrease compared to last year or only decreased slightly.

Top schools show slight or no decline

According to Ms. Trang, although this year's math scores for the 10th grade entrance exam are generally lower than last year, they are compensated by the scores for literature and English in the 8, 9, and 10 range. So the overall score range will not decrease compared to last year.

From there, Ms. Trang assessed that the benchmark scores of inner-city high schools will not decrease or decrease slightly compared to last year, while the top suburban high schools will decrease more, the expected decrease is about 1 point compared to last year.

"There are more than 14,000 candidates with scores from 9 to 9.75 in English and more than 11,000 candidates with scores from 8 to 8.75 in English along with about 3,000 students with scores above 8 in math.

With such a high score range, students will register for top schools. And so, top schools in the inner city will not decrease in score or will decrease slightly compared to last year," Ms. Trang analyzed.

For top schools like Le Quy Don High School (District 3), this year the school has fewer enrollment targets, so with the actual score distribution as analyzed above, the expected benchmark score will increase slightly by about 0.25 or 0.5 points.

As for top high schools that do not reduce enrollment quotas, such as Bui Thi Xuan High School and Trung Vuong High School, the standard score, if reduced, will not decrease much compared to last year.

Apart from those schools, other high schools in the top inner-city areas of the city, if they have any reduction in scores, will not decrease much but will maintain scores approximately the same as last year or slightly lower.

Because the top schools in the inner city do not have much reduction in scores, the second-ranked schools will not have much reduction in scores, only about 1 standard point lower than last year. Because the second-ranked schools will "catch" the students who have failed in the top schools.

However, according to Ms. Trang, the benchmark scores for the top three schools will decrease further, possibly by more than 1 point and drop completely at lower-segment schools.

A teacher at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School also said that after looking at the score distribution of this year's 10th grade entrance exam results, she also saw that the standard scores of top schools would likely only decrease slightly or remain the same.

"My students reported that their scores were not lower than those of last year's students. Although their math scores were lower, their literature scores pulled them back. Therefore, the competition is still at the top schools," this teacher commented.

3 subjects 10 points also pass

Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), commented that the average score is not as high as last year.

"On average, there are about 11,000 students with a total score of 23 points or more in three subjects. Thus, except for the specialized school system, this year the benchmark score will decrease at top schools by about 1-2 points. Meanwhile, middle schools will decrease by 2-3 points" - Mr. Phu analyzed.

According to Mr. Phu, with such a score range, at the bottom there will be schools that only require three subjects with a total score of about 10 points to pass, or less than 10 points can also pass.

Mr. Kieu Tuan Hung, head of the math group at Nguyen Van To Secondary School (District 10), also commented that the top schools will decrease by about 1 point, the middle schools will decrease by more, and the lower schools will decrease by even more.

"The range of scores this year is not even, unlike last year, and with math like that, I think the benchmark score will be about 1 point lower than last year at top schools," said Mr. Hung.

What if I fail all three wishes?

Teachers advise parents that if they need to review their exam scores, they need to follow the correct procedure. Parents need to go to the secondary school to fill out the review form according to the department's regulations.

After the department announces the benchmark scores, candidates who pass their wishes will study that wish. Or if candidates fail all three wishes, they will find a place for their children to study such as continuing education , vocational secondary school or private high school.

Parents can also wait to see if the department will recruit for the second round of 10th grade admissions like last year. If so, continue to register to find a public school for their children to attend.

Math: more than half of the total number of candidates scored below 5 points

55,264/98,464 candidates in Ho Chi Minh City had math scores below 5 points in the 10th grade exam. Thus, more than 56% of candidates had math scores below average.

The 10th grade math entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 is considered more difficult than previous years. After the exam, many opinions predicted that this year's exam scores would be lower than previous years.

Thus, compared to 2023, the percentage of candidates with math scores below 5 points in 2024 increased by 10%. Last year, about 46% of candidates had math scores below 5.

As every year, English is the subject with the most 10s out of the three 10th grade exam subjects. However, the number of candidates with scores below 5 is also not small.

Although literature does not have a 10, the number of exams with below average scores is the lowest of the three subjects.
