Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan speaks at the forum |
Speaking at the forum, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that global economic growth is currently in a period of sharp decline due to tight monetary policy, the war in Ukraine continues to weigh on economic activities, seriously affecting all economic and social aspects. Global trade began to decline from the fourth quarter of 2022, resulting in global trade increasing by only 2.7% in 2022.
"In the context of the world economy still facing many political uncertainties, persistent high inflation, tight monetary policies and unstable financial markets, the World Trade Organization forecasts that global trade in 2023 will increase by 1.7%, 1 percentage point lower than the previous year. Many industries and services with a high proportion of GDP have recorded negative growth in recent years, which has brought the growth rate of many industries and services down to a low level. Similarly, the Vietnamese economy has been facing many difficulties and challenges such as: a decline in orders, lack of product consumption markets, and exhaustion of capital sources" - Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said.
In that context, e-commerce and Vietnam's digital economy continue to be one of the bright spots in socio-economic development.
According to a report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company released on November 1, Vietnam continues to be the country with the fastest digital economic growth rate in Southeast Asia for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023) and is forecast to continue to hold this position in 2025 (tied with the Philippines). Vietnam's gross merchandise value (GMV) is expected to reach a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20%, from 30 billion USD in 2023 to nearly 45 billion USD in 2025. In particular, GMV growth in the next 2 years of Vietnam's digital economy will be led by the e-commerce sector.

Accordingly, Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that in 2023 and the following years, with the above strong growth momentum, the e-commerce market and Vietnam's digital economy will develop even more strongly and create momentum for economic development.
